Guide: Questions you should consider before you decide on acrylic paint
What is an acrylic varnish?
Acrylic lacquer is a real all-rounder. Do you want to give your old chair a new shine, or do you want to make your garden fence look nice again? Then acrylic lacquer is just the thing for you. Whether indoors or out, this paint is always a good choice.
You can find acrylic resins in many different variations. As a primer to even out unevenness or to cover the previous colour. But also as an intermediate or final coat, so that your paintwork meets your requirements after painting.
You should rather use water-thinnable acrylic lacquers as they contain less solvents which are responsible for the pungent smell and are therefore more suitable for indoor use.
For which surfaces can you use acrylic paint?
Acrylic lacquer is not only an all-rounder in the field of application, but also offers the possibility to embellish all surfaces. These are the seven most important materials:
Paper/canvas (artists’ supplies)
If you want to paint over an already existing surface, the so-called cross-cut test helps. In this test, the acrylic paint is scratched several times with a sharp knife.
If no paint should flake off you can sand the surface slightly and repaint it. Otherwise the old acrylic lacquer must unfortunately be removed.
How do you process acrylic paint?
As a general rule, the surface should be cleaned before each painting with acrylic varnish, so that it is free of dirt and grease.
Wood or metal should also be roughened or sanded before coating with acrylic varnish. This gives the acrylic varnish a better hold and thus makes it more durable.
For pre-sanding we recommend 180 grit sandpaper and for sanding 280 grit sandpaper. Important: Remove dust thoroughly after sanding! Otherwise the load capacity will be reduced.
The surface should also be level. This makes the surface smoother and the result makes an even better impression. Filler varnish can help with particularly uneven surfaces.
And this is how the perfect acrylic lacquer coating is achieved:
Cover all areas not to be painted (painter’s foil, -flow).
Pour the required acrylic lacquer into a tub or container, as it dries out quickly.
Dip the brush tip only about a third of the way into the paint, then wipe off. Wipe off paint rollers after wetting in the ribbed tub.
Paint line by line. For an even picture, apply the acrylic varnish to the end first crosswise and then lengthwise over the surface.
At the end, run the brush in long strips and smooth out any paint attachments.
Unfortunately, there are also many things that can be done wrong when painting with acrylic varnish. To avoid this, you should watch this video here and inform yourself.
Where can I buy acrylic paint?
In any standard DIY store. Whether Obi, Hagebau or the do-it-yourself specialist trade. You can get acrylic paint everywhere.
You will also find a large selection of acrylic lacquers online. The most visited websites where you can find acrylic lacquer are:
How much is acrylic paint?
The cost of acrylic lacquer is difficult to define, as there are many factors involved. Is it an acrylic paint with colour pigments, transparent paint, filler acrylic paint or acrylic paint for indoor/outdoor use.
How does acrylic lacquer differ from other lacquer types?
The biggest difference between acrylic lacquer and other types of lacquer is that acrylic lacquer contains water. Therefore, acrylic lacquer has a milder odour, is easier to clean with water and clearly has a better environmental balance.
Other paints, on the other hand, contain more solvents. These are known as synthetic resin paints or alkyd resin paints. They score points with easy processing, high covering power and high impact resistance.
Easy to process
Tool cleaning with water
Short open time
No high gloss effect
Not so durable
Decision: What types of acrylic paint are there and which one is right for you?
Acrylic lacquer can be distinguished in different ways. All in all there are three ways to distinguish the lacquer, we will go into one of them in more detail here.
- Colourful acrylic lacquer
- Transparenter Acryllack
You will find the other types of differentiation in the purchase criteria section.
What is colourful acrylic lacquer and what are the advantages and disadvantages?
Colourful acrylic varnish is enriched with colour particles and thus gets the colouring. Different RAL shades are possible, as well as different matt types.
This allows your creativity free rein. Since acrylic lacquer is also suitable for canvas, it can also be used by artists
What is transparent acrylic lacquer and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
Transparent varnish does not contain any colour particles and can also be called clear varnish. Possible uses here would be to protect painted objects from the weather.
An example would be a painted stone. This stone receives a glossy surface due to the transparent acrylic lacquer coating and additionally protects the layer from UV radiation and weathering. Thus the yellowing of your art is prevented.
Purchase criteria: You can compare and rate acrylic paints based on these factors
In the following we would like to show you which factors you can use to compare and evaluate acrylic paints. This will make it easier for you to decide whether a certain acrylic lacquer is suitable for you or not.
In summary, these are:
- Field of application
Field of application
A distinction is made between indoors and outdoors. For indoors, newer acrylic paints with a higher water content are more suitable, as the smell of the solvent is less intense.
For outdoor use you can also use acrylic paint with a higher solvent content, which is easier to apply and dries less quickly.
There is the possibility of priming, spraying or painting.
Spray bottles are clearly limited in size (litres calculated on the surface area), but produce a more beautiful colour image due to the even spraying. In addition, the acrylic spray bottles are light and therefore easier to transport.
Acrylic lacquer for painting, on the other hand, scores points with large quantities, i.e. a large surface area has to be covered. So this would be the right choice if you want to repaint the living room or the bathroom.
High water content and reduced content of toxic solvents characterize the newer acrylic paints available on the market.
Especially environmentally friendly acrylic paints are marked with the blue angel.
Trivia: Worth knowing facts about acrylic paint
How do you remove acrylic paint?
There are many ways to remove acrylic lacquer. However, many think of solvents as irritating agents with a pungent odour, such as brush cleaners.
Water is a good way to remove acrylic varnish and indeed a very good way.
With thick layers of lacquer, one should even try to reduce the lacquer surface with a spatula or a sharp knife before the cleaning process. Then you can continue working with paint stripper.
The simplest method is the cross-cut test as mentioned above, where you can determine whether the existing acrylic paint is still stable. Then you can simply paint over it.
Which acrylic colours are available?
The choice of acrylic colors is huge. From white acrylic lacquer to red acrylic lacquer. The RAL fan helps to find the right colour for the living room and children’s room.
Often brands offer so-called colour collections, which cover acrylic lacquer from silk matt to high gloss.
Colour design concepts should encourage the end consumer to bring colour into their lives. You may also be interested in old handicraft painting techniques such as stippling, stenciling, wiping and wrapping.
Green tones can have a balancing effect, while red and orange tones are intended to stimulate communication. My tips for a successful new coat of paint would therefore be
- For large rooms you can choose darker colours, these give the room a certain cosiness
Small rooms should be designed in a lighter shade to make the room look bigger
Don’t forget the influence of light. Light colours often appear paler and darker tones are not as oppressive
Grey is now replacing the classic white in the living area, it has established itself as a neutral colour
