  • There are three different common types of alpaca pillows, namely those made of alpaca superfine wool, as well as alpaca pillows made of royal alpaca wool and baby alpaca wool.
  • Since many alpaca wool products only contain a small percentage of wool, it is important to test whether the wool is genuine alpaca wool. For this purpose, there is, for example, the burning test, or other characteristics such as the special shine and feel of the wool.

Guide: Questions to consider before buying an alpaca pillow

What is an alpaca pillow?

Alpacas are mammals that can be classified as camels. The quadrupeds have a very soft fur, which is the main reason for their breeding.
Primarily they have their home in Peru, where 80% of the alpacas living worldwide are at home. In total, this amounts to 3.5 million camels.

There they live in the Peruvian Andes, where they are exposed to extremely cold temperatures up to 4000 meters above sea level. Therefore the fur has adapted to the conditions, so that it should keep 7 times warmer than the fur of the sheep.

The alpaca is a domesticated form of camel. This means that they were specially bred by humans, which resulted in a modified breed of camels. More than 5000 years ago the breeding of this special species was started.

The wool of the animal has always been used to make utensils for humans. Besides alpaca pillows, there are also blankets and clothes made of the fluffy fabric.

What are the special characteristics of an alpaca cushion?

If you take a closer look at the alpaca, you can already deduce some special characteristics of the wool. Among them is certainly the beautiful appearance of the fine fabric, which can be described as very noble.

In addition, the alpaca pillow is very durable due to its fabric and is dust and dirt repellent. Especially with a pillow this is very advantageous.

The pilling tendency is also very low. Pilling” tendency refers to the property of fabric to form small nodules, which makes it less able to keep warm and looks unattractive.

Did you know that an alpaca only supplies enough wool for about one sweater in a year?
Due to the rarity and the conditions of transportation of wool, alpaca pillows cannot be so cheap if they are made of pure wool.

What is also really rare with materials for bedding such as pillows etc. is the naturalness of the fabric or wool. Hardly any other material besides alpaca wool is naturally so suitable for sleeping without having to be chemically treated.

Almost any other material has to be modified during production in order for it to serve its purpose optimally, whereas this is not the case with alpaca wool products.

Klaus KovacsManaging Director Wolkenreich
“What fascinated me so much was the naturalness of the materials.
That you have found a natural hair that does not have to be chemically treated or processed and then just loses an important part of its naturalness, but that there is something that is mechanically or, let’s say, physically top for bedding. […] Practice has also shown that the fiber is really fantastic. (source: youtube.com)

How much is an alpaca pillow?

Alpaca pillows are available in different price ranges. You can spend very little or very much money on them. But be careful here. A real alpaca cushion can not be too cheap.

As already mentioned, the alpacas are at home in Peru. For the production of a pillow made of real alpaca wool, therefore, more work steps are required than for pillows made of sheep’s wool or the like.

The price also depends to a large extent on the filling quantity. The more wool it contains, i.e. the larger the pillow is, the more expensive it becomes. In the following table we have listed the prices for you in relation to the amount of filling and size of the pillow:

Where can I buy alpaca pillows?

Alpaca cushions are available in various furniture stores and also in online shops. Due to the quality standard, which is not given everywhere, one should take the selection of the seller to heart.
Many shops also sell cheap goods at bargain prices and mark only incidentally, unobtrusively, that the cushion is not made of 100% alpaca wool.
According to our research, these online stores sell the most alpaca pillows:

my-alpaca-shop.com
alpacafinca.com
abolengo-alpaca.com
amazon.com

All alpaca cushions that we present on our site have a link to at least one of these shops. If you have found one you like, you can strike immediately.

What is the alternative to alpaca pillows?

Besides the fine alpaca pillows there are of course countless other pillows that do the job. An alpaca pillow belongs under the pillows rather to the special kind.

Conventional pillows usually consist of (several) layers of foam. According to this they are produced by humans themselves and cannot be traced back to any animal wool.

Such a pillow does not bring a special feeling with it, but it certainly does the job.

With alpaca pillows, a very gentle sleep is expressed by the fine wool fibres, which are extremely lightly springy and create a feel-good experience.

Decision: What types of alpaca pillows are available and which one is right for you?

Alpaca pillows come in different types, which differ in the variety of alpaca wool. A distinction is made between three types of animal wool in particular:

  • Alpaka Superfein
  • Baby Alpaca Wool
  • Royal Alpaca Wool

The difference lies mainly in the number of microns and the resulting differences in the properties of the pillow. Micron” is a unit of measurement that indicates the thickness of a fibre in thousandths of a millimetre.

The micron number is a quality feature of wool products, because the higher the value, the more likely the product is to scratch, which is usually very annoying.

Whether a wool product is scratchy is very individual, but the comfort limit should be reached from about 28 microns.

What distinguishes an alpaca pillow with alpaca superfine wool and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

The alpaca superfine wool is the most commonly used wool of alpacas and is usually to be expected if nothing else is specified with the product.

However, at around 25.5 microns, the type of wool can be perceived as scratchy.

For alpaca pillows with wool filling this is relatively unimportant, but if the wool is also superficial to the pillow, it could be disturbing.

Advantages

Most convenient
Very well suited as a filling

Disadvantages

Least fluffy
Could scratch

What distinguishes an alpaca pillow with baby alpaca wool and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

This type of alpaca pillow is deceptive by name, because these are not poor alpaca babies who are shorn at an early age, but rather the wool of those alpacas is called baby alpaca wool, which genetically has very fine wool.

According to this, the number of microns here is lower than with alpaca superfine wool and it is also much finer and lighter. The micron number of this soft, supple wool is 22.5 microns.

Thus it does not scratch and is very suitable for alpaca cushions both for filling and superficially.

Advantages

Very soft
Does not scratch
Superficial, as well as filling

Disadvantages

Slightly more expensive
Middle Thing
Rare

What an alpaca cushion made with Royal Alpaca wool and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

As the name suggests, alpaca cushions made from Royal Alpaca wool are the top of the range among alpaca cushions. At 19 microns they are the finest, softest and most supple.

This is particularly suitable as a pillow, as the face and neck area is the most sensitive part of the body.

This type of pillow is the luxury type and belongs to the highest price range. The differences that this type of alpaca pillow has to the others are more in the detail.

Advantages

The best alpaca wool
Very fine and soft
Luxury

Disadvantages

Most expensive
Small differences

Purchase criteria: These are the factors you can compare and rate Alpaca pillows

In the following we will show you which aspects you should consider when choosing between the variety of alpaca pillows on offer.

The criteria that will help you decide which alpaca pillow is best for you are the following:

  • Price
  • Haptics / Feeling
  • Optics
  • Purity

In the following paragraphs we will explain what these criteria are.

Price

As already mentioned, due to the aforementioned reasons of transport barriers and the rarity of alpaca wool, there can be no extremely cheap, genuine alpaca pillows.

Therefore the price is also a quality feature. Those who discover an alpaca cushion of 10 or 20 € will not miss a good bargain if they do not buy it but rather save themselves from making a bad purchase.

If you want to buy a very cheap pillow, you unfortunately have to do without an alpaca pillow.

Did you know that the use of natural materials is very environmentally conscious?
Most of the fabrics used in the production of textiles today use vast amounts of harmful chemical substances to enhance the material, which has a huge impact on the environment.

Haptics / Feeling

Any genuine alpaca pillow with superficial wool, even those with alpaca superfine wool, will not scratch strongly. In the case of mixed wool and other imitations, an unpleasant scratching could indicate fake.

Besides the scratch test there is also the electrical test. Real wool can be charged easily, similar to what you might know from your childhood with balloons.

Moreover, when you touch the pillow you can see what alpaca wool is in it. The softness of the alpaca pillow could, for example, tell you what kind of wool is in the pillow.

Optics

The wool of alpacas can be checked for quality by its appearance. Genuine alpaca wool has a very special shine. Because it is so unique, it is easy to tell if the pillow is real if you know about it.

The color, however, can be very close to the original, even with fake. There are about 22 natural colours in which alpaca wool is found.

In addition, genuine alpaca wool is also sometimes re-dyed, which can sometimes make it look fake, even if it is not.

Therefore, the best way to visually determine whether it is real wool or not is via the lustre.

Purity

Many fake products, which are usually very cheap, advertise with inscriptions such as “genuine alpaca wool”. On closer inspection, however, one can see that usually only a few percent of the pillow is made of real wool.

Much more important are labels like “100% alpaca wool”, because then it is guaranteed.

Trivia: Worth knowing facts about alpaca cushions

What is the best way to tell if my alpaca pillow is made of real fabric?

To check an alpaca pillow for real time there is a purity test. Real alpaca wool has the property to smell very special and unique.

If you just pluck some fibers out of the pillow and light it. If it’s alpaca wool, the fibres should smell sweet and not make any big flames.

Other materials smell like paper when burning or strike large flames. At least this way it is possible to see if one hundred percent wool is present. Unfortunately not whether other types of wool are contained.

How do I best care for my alpaca pillow?

As already mentioned, alpaca wool is inherently dirt-repellent. Instead of putting the alpaca pillow in the washing machine, you should hang it over the windowsill overnight.

If the stains are really stubborn, you should still wash it lukewarm by hand.

The wool does not tolerate the heat in the washing machine very well. You should also never put the alpaca pillow in the dryer.
