Guide: Questions to consider before buying a bath faucet
What height should my bathtub fitting have?
For the installation height of a new faucet with shower head, it is recommended as a standard measure to install it at about 110 cm above the bottom of the bath. This makes showering comfortable for average tall people. The installation height of the fitting and the length of the shower hose can, of course, also be individually determined and adjusted.
Basically, the dimensions for bathtub fittings are standardized, provided that they are manufactured in Germany.
If the desired model does not correspond to the local standard dimensions, you can usually use offsets.
What does a bathtub fitting cost?
The price of a bath faucet can vary greatly depending on the design model, the type of mixer tap selected and possible additional functions such as an extra shower head or even a thermostat.
To give you an initial overview, we have listed the price categories of various tap models for you in the following table.
Where can I buy bathtub fittings?
You can buy your new bathtub faucet online, at a local Bauhaus or sometimes as a special offer at discount stores. On site you have the advantage of seeing the workmanship of the final product live, while online you have a wider choice and an easier way to compare different products.
According to our research, these online shops sell the most bath faucets:
All bathtub fittings that we present on our site are provided with a link to at least one of these shops. So if you have found a bath faucet that you like, you can strike right away.
Decision: What types of bathtub faucets are available and which one is right for you?
If you are thinking about buying a bathtub faucet, you basically have three options to choose from.
- Two-hand fitting
- Single lever fitting
These different fitting types are basically available for all three design variants presented in this article, i.e. as a free-standing bathtub fitting, for mounting on the edge of the bath or on the wall.
With the following section we would like to make it easier for you to decide which technical design of your bathtub fitting is the right one for you.
What distinguishes a two-hand bath tap and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
With the two-handle faucet, as the name suggests, hot and cold water are regulated independently of each other by means of a separate handle on the left and right of the tap. This faucet is classic, timeless and is still frequently used in modern bathrooms because of its traditional design.
classic, traditional design
due to the simple construction, repairs are easy to carry out yourself
Temperature must be adjusted with both hands each time
increased water consumption until the desired temperature is reached
What distinguishes a single-lever mixer as a bathtub fitting and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
The single-lever faucet is, due to its easy handling, the most frequently used in kitchen and bathroom and therefore available in many different designs. Many useful accessories such as economy functions are also available for this model.
large selection of designs and colours
stepless, comfortable, one-handed operation
Lower water consumption than two-handle fittings
repairs are difficult to carry out due to complex construction
usually somewhat more expensive than two-hand valves
What distinguishes a thermostatic bath fitting and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
The thermostatic fitting consists of two controllers, one for the temperature and one for the flow rate. The water temperature is automatically maintained for the entire service life and the thermostatic valve reacts automatically to any pressure differences in the pipe. This ensures a constant temperature even if, for example, the toilet flush is pressed in the same pipe system. Additives such as scald protection and economy function are also available for this model.
constant water temperature and water quantity
no temperature fluctuations or pressure loss through other consumers
usually available with integrated scald protection and economy function
usually more expensive than one- or two-hand valves
repairs are hardly possible due to the complex construction
Purchase criteria: You can compare and rate bath fittings based on these factors
In the following, we will show you which aspects you can use to decide between the multitude of possible bathtub fittings.
The criteria you can use to compare bath faucets include
- Care and maintenance
In the following paragraphs we will explain what is important for the individual criteria.
In addition to the visual aspect, you should also consider what technically fits best into your bathroom.
In the following paragraphs we would like to introduce you to three fundamentally different versions of bathtub amratures, each of which is available in a modern design or retro look.
Freestanding bathtub fitting
The free-standing fitting is mounted on the floor next to a (usually equally free-standing) bath. If you particularly like the design of this variant, you should take this into consideration when laying the water pipes and place the water connections appropriately.
Fitting for wall mounting
In this variant, the surface-mounted or concealed fitting is mounted directly on the wall next to the bathtub. The edge of the bathtub remains free to place shower gel, soap or even the scented candles for a grey autumn evening in the bathtub.
The installation of this fitting is a little more complicated and expensive, but it can also be more comfortable and look more modern when bathing.
Installing a fitting directly on the edge of the bathtub is less complicated than integrating it into the wall. Bath tub edge amratures are available in many designs, so there are hardly any limits to your design ideas.
Care and maintenance
When choosing the design and material of your bath faucet, it is also important to consider how much care and maintenance the product may require over the next few years of operation.
So it makes sense in any case to choose a high quality fitting if you intend to use it for a longer period of time. Poor quality fittings tend to squeak, drip or simply get a damaged surface that no longer looks good.
Maintenance is also more complicated and time-consuming for strongly angled products with many different materials than for fittings with simple, clear lines and possibly even a dirt- and lime-resistant surface.
One reason for this is that, according to EU directives, it is permitted, for example, to market components which are sold but which should not actually be installed due to the local drinking water ordinance.
The choice of material depends not only on your visual requirements, but also on the desired quality, the maintenance requirements and the durability of your fitting. A basic criterion for the materials used in a bath tub fitting is resistance to rust in damp conditions.
To give you an easy overview, we have listed the advantages and disadvantages of different materials for you.
Once you have decided on a bathtub fitting, you can also choose between various additional functions. This will increase the price of your new faucet a little, but can significantly improve the comfort of daily use and maintenance.
- Economy water consumption – automatically reduces water consumption by approx. 50% using the economy button
- Thermostat – ensures a constant water temperature, even with pressure losses in the pipe system and is therefore economical and easy to operate
- Scald protection – safety barrier at 38°C, ideal for children
- Anti-limescale protection – flexible silicone knobs on the aerator of the fitting and the spray nozzles of the shower head make it easy to rub off limescale
- Shower spray – ideal if you also want to shower in the bathtub
Trivia: Worth knowing facts about bath fittings
How do I install a bathtub fitting?
How you install your bath tap depends on which model you have chosen. In the video we show you how to mount the faucet on the wall. In case of doubt, it is best to consult an expert to avoid long-term problems with the water supply.
Is it possible to connect a washing machine to the bath tap?
In principle, there is nothing to be said against connecting your washing machine to the bathtub tap, if there is no other possibility due to lack of space.
All you need is an intermediate kit and the appropriate long water hoses for the connection. You should also make sure that the power connection is far enough away from the bathtub. You can easily drain off the waste water via the bathtub’s outlet.
How do I clean dirt and lime from my bathtub fitting?
To keep your bathroom hygienically clean, it is important to clean the fittings properly. This extends the life of the material and makes it shine like new for a long time.
In principle, you should best use scratch-free cloths such as soft sponges and cloths, lint-free cloths, microfibre cloths or a leather cloth for cleaning. Absolutely taboo are scouring pads or stainless steel sponges, because you will permanently damage the surface with these. Also pay attention to the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid losing any warranty claims.
In the following table we have summarised for you which cleaning agents are best suited for cleaning your fittings.
Never apply the cleaning agent directly to the fitting, but to the cleaning cloth. Take care not to leave the agent on the surface for long, remove all residues of cleaning agent completely with sufficient clear water and dry the fitting with a soft cloth.
You cannot see which substances are used in construction products and therefore it is usually unclear whether they are permissible for contact with drinking water.
For this reason it is advisable to ask the manufacturer or look up the list of open-datapool.de.
Also craftsmen would be in principle obligated to clear their customers up over all dangers, which a material can bring with itself. If the armature is however procured and given to the craftsman only for installation, this has in most cases just as little a notion of it as the customer. (Source: German handicraft newspaper.de)
My bathtub fitting whistles – what can I do?
A whistling faucet is not only unpleasant for the ears, but also does not do the water pipes any good. In the following paragraph we have listed some points for you to try out to save your faucet.
- Check that the angle valves are completely open.
Unscrew the aerator sieve and clean it from possibly stuck lime and other mineral residues.
Check the seals in the fitting and replace them if necessary.
If none of this helps, turn off the main tap or the shut-off valve of your apartment for safety reasons and pull off the handles of the tap. Depending on the model, you may have to remove a union nut or a split pin.
- Remove the valves in the tap and place them in a solution of vinegar and water for about 1 hour.
After cleaning, grease the valves again and install them.
If this does not help either, you should replace the fitting with a new one.
I live in a rented apartment – who is responsible for the replacement of the bathtub fitting?
In principle, the landlord is responsible for all components of the building fabric, i.e. walls, floors and walls, and the tenant is responsible for everything within the apartment, i.e. light switches, lamps and correspondingly also fittings.
In consultation with the landlord, however, if there is a clear increase in the value of the apartment, it is also possible to have the costs reimbursed by the owner. However, this must always be clarified in advance to avoid any ambiguity.
