For whom is a foam mattress suitable?
Foam mattresses are generally suitable for those who sweat less when sleeping. In addition, foam mattresses are very suitable for allergy sufferers.
The advantage of a foam mattress is that it can be used in many ways for young and old and helps to ensure a good sleeping experience. A foam mattress is very suitable for:
Babies, children and young people
Adults with lower to medium weight
With babies and infants, care should be taken not to use a mattress that is too hard.
Therefore, for children, as for persons of lighter weight, a cold foam mattress seems appropriate. This mattress also stands out for its heat-storing function.
Foam mattresses are particularly suitable for allergy sufferers. Due to their hygienic nature and breathability, they are recommended for allergy sufferers.
A foam mattress is also suitable for adults who have a lower to medium weight. In the following you can find all kinds of information about the different types of mattresses, degrees of firmness etc.
What should I pay attention to when buying a foam mattress?
When buying a foam mattress, it is advisable to consider your body weight and height. Criteria such as hardness is another essential point to consider when buying a mattress.
Buying a foam mattress is anything but easy. There are important points to consider. In this section, we will explain everything you need to know when buying a foam mattress.
The degree of firmness is an essential part to consider. It indicates the firmness of the mattress. Body weight and height must be taken into account when choosing the degree of firmness.
It is essential to prevent chronic back and neck pain and circulatory problems.
When determining the degree of firmness of a foam mattress, it is important to note that during sleep the spine must be kept in its usual double-S curvature.
What else you can do against back pain, you will learn in the following article:
How do I find the right hardness level for me?
The determination of the degree of hardness for you should be based on your height and your body weight.
In the following, we have researched for you and have selected and compiled a table with the points to be considered.
In the following we now come to how you determine the perfect degree of hardness for you. For this purpose we have listed rules of thumb for height and weight.
The basic rule for determining the degree of hardness is: The higher the degree of hardness of a foam mattress, the more resilient it is.
This means that a foam mattress with a higher degree of firmness is suitable for heavy persons and a foam mattress with a lower degree of firmness for persons of lighter weight.
When choosing the size of your mattress, please note that a foam mattress should be longer than 30 cm of your body and at least 90 cm wide.
In this section you will find help in finding the firmness for your foam mattress using a formula.
The formula uses your body weight and height to calculate the appropriate degree of hardness for you:
- Body weight in kg < (body height in cm minus 100) → soft
- Body weight in kg = (body height in cm minus 100) → medium
- Body weight in kg > (body height in cm minus 100) → fixed
You are 170 cm tall and weigh 60 kg, then you calculate:
Body height 170 – 100 = 70
Body weight 60 is less than 70, so:
60 > (170-100) → weich
Here it is recommended to buy a foam mattress with a hardness of H1.
So, now we have shown you how to find the right degree of hardness for you. Beyond the degree of hardness you should also pay attention to your individual body characteristics.
- Heavy persons often tend to sweat more, so it is important to find a mattress that is highly breathable.
- Lighter people tend to freeze faster. In this case, it is recommended to add heat-storing foam mattresses such as Visco or cold foam mattresses.

Decision: What types of foam mattresses are available and which one is right for you?
When choosing foam mattresses there is a huge choice. In this section we explain several types of foam that you can choose from. With foam mattresses you have a choice:
- Comfort foam
- Gel foam
- cold foam
In the following we will introduce you to the respective foam types as well as their advantages and disadvantages.
What distinguishes a comfort foam mattress and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
The comfort foam mattress consists mainly of a flexible foam mixture. The foaming gives the mattress an irregular and open-pored surface structure.
This makes the comfort foam mattress very point elastic and breathable. Due to its elasticity and breathability, the mattress gives way where pressure is applied.
Here your spine is offered the optimal support.
Note: For this type of foam mattress, the higher the comfort foam mattress, the better the padding.
Well suited for allergy sufferers
Suitable for overweight persons
Open proig and breathable
High dead weight
Does not store heat
Not well suited for people with back pain
What distinguishes a Visco foam mattress and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
A Visco foam mattress is made of thermoelastic foam. The material has the advantage of adapting exactly to the body shape.
This ensures that the body always fits the mattress perfectly. The lying sensation can be described as weightless and pressure-free.
With visco-foam mattresses it should be noted that the firmness of the visco-foam is related to the temperature.
In other words, the warmer it gets through the body, the softer the material becomes. A lying test in a bed shop is therefore not advisable.
Suitable for allergic and asthmatic persons
Supporting substructure relieves the spinal column
Suitable for all sleeping positions
Not suitable for heavy sweaters
Not suitable for persons with severe overweight
Not suitable for restless sleepers
So how do I recognize a good visco foam mattress?
Note the density of the mattress – this should be between 45 and 55 kg/m3.
Furthermore, the height of the supporting foam core must be taken into account – the underlying foam layer should be at least 10 cm high. This serves to provide sufficient support and cushioning.
What distinguishes a gel foam mattress and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
Gel foam mattresses are filled from a viscous and heavy gel. When pressure is applied, the gel foam subsides.
It therefore adapts ideally to the body. Due to its composition, the spine is perfectly and ergonomically supported. When the pressure then decreases, the material returns to its original shape.
This type of mattress is particularly suitable for people who frequently roll back and forth during sleep. The sleeping position is not important with this type of mattress.
Suitable for allergic and asthmatic persons
Suitable for restless sleepers
Selective adaptation to the body
Not suitable for people with a high body weight who sleep predominantly on their stomach
Poor air circulation
High purchase price
What distinguishes a cold foam mattress and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
Cold foam mattresses are one of the most popular types of mattresses. They are characterized by their durability, thermal insulation and high adaptability.
Furthermore, it is particularly suitable for algerics and asthmatics and is therefore increasingly preferred.
Thanks to its perfect body support, this type of mattress is particularly suitable for people with restless sleep and for those who suffer from back or joint pain.
Suitable for allergic and asthmatic persons
No high mattress weight
Hardness grades vary from manufacturer to manufacturer (hardness grade not standardized)
Less suitable for very heavy persons
Less suitable for people who sweat a lot
Purchase criteria: You can compare and evaluate foam mattresses based on these factors
In the following we will explain which aspects will help you decide between the many mattress models.
The criteria you can use to compare foam mattresses include
- Suitability for allergy sufferers
- Hardness grade
- Volume weight
In the following paragraphs we will therefore explain in detail what is important for the individual criteria.
In terms of sizes, you don’t have to worry about being restricted in your choice of sizes. In this section you will find all common sizes for mattresses.
As already explained in the decision section, foam mattresses can be differentiated into different materials.
Mattresses range from cold foam, comfort foam mattresses to gel foam and visco foam mattresses.
Suitability for allergy sufferers
In the case of foam mattresses for allergy sufferers, several properties must be taken into account. The type of allergy or discomfort must be taken into account. In the following section you will find more information on this.
House dust mite allergy: For this type of allergy, make sure to use a foam mattress that
- offers good breathability to wick away moisture;
- does not contain animal materials;
- where the cover is washable at 60-95 degrees.
Here, a cold foam mattress with a washable cover is often recommended. Since cold foam is considered to be particularly elastic and breathable, this type of mattress is particularly suitable for allergy sufferers.
In this section we explain what the hardness of a mattress is and how to find the right one for you.
What is a mattress firmness level actually?
The degree of firmness is an indication from the manufacturer of how hard or how soft a mattress is. In the advice section we have already given you a table in which you can find the different degrees of hardness.
Here you will find another video that shows you how to choose the mattress with the perfect degree of firmness for you.
What criteria do I have to consider for the degree of hardness?
When determining the degree of hardness, in most cases only the body weight is taken into account. However, this is wrong.
Other aspects are decisive for determining the degree of hardness of a mattress:
- Body height
- Body weight
- Sleeping position
- Personal preferences of the degree of hardness
In addition to the degree of hardness, a further criterion is the density (RG). The RG tells you how much material was used in the foam mattress.
The RGt is a so-called quality feature. This means that the higher the RGt, the higher the quality/longevity of your mattress.
You can often recognize cheap mattresses by their low RG. They are therefore more quickly worn out.
With the RG of a mattress you should make sure that it is 35 kg/m3 or more. This guarantees a long life of the mattress.

How do I clean a foam mattress?
We have selected this video to show you what you should pay special attention to when cleaning your covers.
In this section we will explain how you can clean foam mattresses.
Here you need not worry that they will not dry again. For this reason the following cleaning options are suggested in various portals:
- Cleaning the foam mattress in the washing machine
- Cleaning the foam mattress in the bathtub
Cleaning the foam mattress in the washing machine
- First, lock the foam mattress in a large duvet cover. Make sure the mattress can’t fall out again.
- Wash your foam mattress on a gentle cycle at 30 or 40 degrees.
- Note: Only add a little detergent, otherwise the foam mattress will foam too much.
- To dry, hang the cleaned foam mattress horizontally over the clothes horse outside.
- Note: Do not hang it over the line in any case, otherwise it could break.
Cleaning the foam mattress in the bathtub
- Place the mattress in the bathtub and fill the bathtub with warm water until it is covered.

How do I get a foam mattress back into shape?
Foam can be brought back into shape with the steam of a steam iron. To do this, you must hold your steam iron over the mattress with the steam and “steam” the entire mattress.
The air that heats up in the foam allows your foam mattress to return to its original shape.
How do I dispose of a foam mattress?
Your foam mattress does not belong in the residual waste. Note here that you must register bulky waste for disposal.
Does your foam mattress now form hollows or is it even torn? Then you need a new mattress.
But what are you doing with your old foam mattress? In this section you will find alternatives for the disposal of your mattress.
However, it is best if you drive your worn or torn foam mattress to a recycling centre yourself.
Another alternative is to return your mattress with a new purchase. Most retailers offer to accept the old mattress when you buy a new one.
Note: Disposal at a recycling centre also causes environmentally harmful dirt. Social institutions are pleased to be able to offer a mattress to people in need.
