Advisor: Questions you should deal with before you buy a folding mattress

What is a folding mattress?

Folding mattresses, also known as folding mattresses, are mattresses which, as the name suggests, are easy to fold together.
With only a few handles, folding mattresses can be folded up or down again and thus perfectly stowed away. Usually a folding mattress can be folded three times.

This is especially practical when guests are visiting, as they do not take up much space and still offer a good sleeping comfort. You can unfold folding mattresses anywhere and enjoy a nap.

What does a folding mattress cost?

You can now find a folding mattress in all price segments. Basically, however, it can be said that folding mattresses for normal use are available for about 20 to 100 euros.

If you use your mattress as a guest bed or for everyday use, we advise you to choose a slightly higher quality and more expensive model, as these usually offer better sleeping comfort.

Where can I buy a folding mattress?

You can buy folding mattresses in specialist shops such as Matratzen-Concord or order them on the Internet.

The following online shops offer the largest variety of folding mattresses:

  • Amazon.de
  • scooter.com
  • Ebay.de
  • Little.de
  • Real.de

Basically, it can be said that the choice on the Internet is much greater than in retail. Moreover, the prices can be compared without any problems. In the retail trade, on the other hand, you can ask the specialist staff directly for advice and have a sample.

Which folding mattress for children?

A household with children often has to expect overnight guests. Therefore it is worthwhile to buy a foldable mattress for the children’s or teenager’s room.
However, as children weigh little, you do not have to buy the most expensive model in these cases. The type “travel bed” is sufficient. This is not too thick, but still comfortable.

The manufacturers Babyblume and Gigapur offer affordable models that meet such requirements. A washable cover is also important in the children’s room, because it is certain that it can get dirty at times. Then the mattress itself is protected.

Is there an alternative to the folding mattress?

As versatile as a folding mattress can be used, it unfortunately cannot meet all requirements. Many customers therefore often ask themselves whether there are alternatives to a folding mattress.
An air bed or inflatable bed with integrated electric pump is an alternative to the classic folding mattress. It is very easy to transport and can possibly offer a much better lying comfort.

Especially as a guest bed or the like such beds can be used very well.

If you want to use your air bed for example for the pool, there are special air mattresses which are also suitable as guest beds. Keep in mind, however, that such models have a slightly shorter life span than conventional air beds.

Decision: What types of folding mattresses are there and which one is right for you?

Basically one can distinguish between three different types of folding mattresses:

  • cold foam mattress
  • Latex mattress
  • Viscose mattress

All types offer different advantages and disadvantages, which are mainly determined by the location and intended use. When choosing a suitable mattress, it is important to consider very carefully in advance what characteristics the desired mattress should have.

In order to guarantee the highest possible sleeping comfort for guests or yourself, factors such as material, weight or material properties as well as lying position, length of sleep or temperature sensation must be taken into account.

It should also always be remembered that the ideal mattress can be completely different from person to person.

To help you make a good purchase decision, in the following section we look at the advantages and disadvantages of each type of mattress and show you which folding mattress is best for you.

How is a cold foam mattress constructed and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

As the name suggests, the core of the cold foam mattress consists of a cold foam, which is the result of polyurethane foaming. This process takes place at low temperature or cold, whereby the raw material is foamed in a mould and then cured.

Advantages

Low weight
High flexibility
Good thermal insulation

Disadvantages

High odour formation

Then cuts are made at certain points to create different resting zones.

The cold foam mattress shines with its low weight, high flexibility and good thermal insulation. Disadvantages are the formation of odours caused by chemical processes in the material and the rapid absorption of liquids.

How is a latex mattress constructed and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Latex mattresses are made of either natural or synthetic rubber. Especially mattresses made of natural latex are both environmentally friendly and hygienic.

During production, the latex mixture is heated in a steel mould and provided with holes, which are responsible for the flexibility and point elasticity of the mattress.

Due to the material, latex mattresses are ideally suited for allergy sufferers, as they prevent dust and thus mites, while offering ideal adaptability for your own lying position.

Advantages

Hygienic
Adaptable
Suitable for allergy sufferers

Disadvantages

High weight
Unsuitable for frequent sweaters

A big disadvantage is the high weight of the mattress compared to mattresses made of cold foam or viscose. Moreover, latex is not breathable and therefore less suitable for people who sweat a lot.

How is a viscose mattress constructed and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Viscose mattresses are made of two layers, the lower layer is cold foam and the upper layer is memory foam. This foam adapts to your own lying position when you sleep, even after a change of position.

Advantages

Perfect adaptability
Relief of heavy parts of the body

Disadvantages

Unsuitable for frequent sweaters
Mattress cannot be turned over

This allows heavier parts of the body to be relieved more easily. The mattress therefore always adapts perfectly to your own lying position. Due to its construction, however, the viscose mattress can only be used on one side and is not suitable for people who perspire heavily.

Purchase criteria: You can compare and evaluate folding mattresses based on these factors

In the following text we inform you about the most important criteria and categories you should pay attention to when you want to buy a folding mattress.

These are the points in question:

  • Material
  • Cover material
  • Size
  • Resilience

In the following text you can read in each case what the above mentioned purchase criteria are.

Material

Folding mattresses are almost always made of foam. It can be divided into two different types:

Standard foam

Foam is characterised by the fact that such a guest bed is mouldable. It always returns to its original position after being shaped.

Did you know that folding mattresses usually have a foam core?
This makes the mattress very light, cheap and elastic. On the other hand, it offers good support.

The higher the so-called density, the more stable and elastic the foam is. In the case of folding mattresses, however, this volume weight is rarely specified by the manufacturer. In general, the volume weight means how many kilograms of raw material have been processed in one cubic metre of foam.

cold foam

Compared to the normal standard foam, cold foam has even better material qualities. The reason is that the material has a coarser pore structure. This leads to a good air permeability.

The cold foam mattress therefore attracts significantly fewer mites than conventional mattresses. Moreover, the elasticity is much higher than that of a folding mattress made of standard foam.

This means that the mattress only yields at the point where the body exerts direct pressure.

Cold foam is therefore particularly recommended for guest mattresses. After all, your visitors should have it as comfortable as possible.

Cover material

The cover of a folding mattress is usually made of polyester or a polyester-cotton mixture.

Did you know it’s unhealthy to make your bed in the morning?
When you’re lying in bed, you generate heat which is transferred to the sheets and mattress. This heat favours the life of mites. If you now spread your blanket over the warm bed, it will stay longer. So wait until the residual heat has dissipated before you make your bed.

Cheap models have a polyester cover. If the folding mattress is of high quality, this usually also applies to the cover and it is usually made of cotton.

A mattress topper or mattress protector should not be confused with a cover; these must be purchased separately.

Size

When buying a folding mattress, you must always make sure that the dimensions in width and length are correct. Who likes to sleep on a folding mattress, with head or feet overhanging?

Therefore the folding mattress should be at least 75 cm wide and 180 cm, better 190 cm, long.

A folding mattress is in most cases not suitable for permanent sleep because it is thin and you lie through it quickly. Heavy persons therefore often get back pain.

However, there are also higher folding mattresses. When buying, therefore, pay attention to the thickness and dimensions of the mattress. The thickness should be at least 8 cm, otherwise the night will be rather sleepless and your guest might wake up with back pain.

Resilience

Since folding mattresses are often designed for one person only, the maximum load capacity is usually 90 kg. This rather low value is mainly caused by the low height of the mattress.

Trivia: Worth knowing facts about folding mattresses

Finally we want to give you some facts about the folding mattress. Therefore we have included some interesting information for you.

What else can you use a folding mattress for besides sleeping?

Especially nowadays, where innovative furniture is very expensive, a folding mattress is the eye-catcher par excellence! Especially in small flats or caravans it is practical and comfortable if you can use the folding mattress as a stylish piece of seating furniture.

As soon as you fold the mattress, it becomes a seat cube with an ideal height and good stability. Some manufacturers offer matching covers as a stylish cover for such a seat cube.

How do I care for a folding mattress?

If you use your folding mattress as a guest bed, it is important that you wash the cover regularly. In most cases this can be done in the washing machine at 30°C.

A dust cover or bed pad can also be very useful. It protects the beds from dust and dirt and thus preserves their durability.

So that your folding mattress always smells good, we recommend that you treat it with a good smelling upholstery spray from time to time. However, such a spray does not replace cleaning. It should only be used to freshen up the mattress.
