Guide: Questions to consider before buying an orthopaedic mattress

When do I need an orthopaedic mattress?

An orthopedic mattress is especially suitable for all those who suffer from severe back pain or disc problems.
It reduces the pressure on vertebrae and intervertebral discs and thus promises a more restful sleep and an alleviation of the complaints.
An orthopaedic mattress is also recommended for people who do not have any complaints, as it supports the spine and the intervertebral discs.

Since orthopaedic mattresses are more expensive than standard mattresses, you should think carefully before buying one.

In what sizes are the orthopaedic mattresses available?

These mattresses are basically available in all standard sizes. Depending on the size of your bed you have to choose the right mattress. However, it must be said that it also depends on the seller which sizes are produced.
The three most common mattress sizes are listed in the following table:

With a double bed you also have the option of using two instead of one mattress. This has the advantage that you can choose different degrees of hardness. In this way an individual sleeping comfort can be guaranteed. The disadvantage is that the crack in the middle can be very annoying.

How much does an orthopaedic mattress cost?

The price may vary depending on the size of the mattress. Good mattresses start from a price of 250 €. The most expensive mattresses on the market can be several thousand euros.
Basically you should look carefully. Not every expensive mattress is suitable for you. If you decide to buy an orthopedic mattress you should pay attention to the price-performance ratio.

Many mattresses have unnecessary features that affect the price but are not really necessary.

Are orthopaedic mattresses covered by health insurance?

A good orthopedic mattress can be quite expensive. Now the question is whether health insurance companies would cover these costs. Unfortunately, we cannot say this with certainty.

But you have a good chance of support with a deductible if you can prove a medical prescription.

In case of doubt, ask your health insurance company how this situation is handled in their case.

Where are orthopaedic mattresses available?

As with almost every product, you can purchase these special mattresses both in stationary stores and online. Depending on what you prefer.

According to our researches, orthopedic mattresses are still bought with great pleasure in the mattress shop of trust. Here, the advice of an expert is very important to find the right mattress.

In the following table I would like to list sellers of orthopedic mattresses in stationary trade as well as in online trade.

What are the alternatives to an orthopaedic mattress?

Nowadays, the term “orthopedic mattress” is a term that is not fixed to a specific mattress. Therefore it is difficult to list alternatives here.
For mattresses there are different materials that have different effects on the body.
As already mentioned, standard mattresses are also a good choice if you do not necessarily need a special mattress. They are often cheaper and promise just as much sleeping comfort.

Decision: What types of orthopaedic mattresses are available and which one is right for you?

There are several different types of orthopedic mattresses on the market. Finding the right mattress is not easy.

Therefore, in this section we would like to introduce you to the different types of orthopaedic mattresses to make your decision easier.

Orthopaedic mattresses differ in the material of which they are made. We have determined the following types:

  • Memoryfoam mattresses
  • Latex foam mattresses
  • Gel foam mattresses
  • Mattresses from cold foam

What distinguishes orthopaedic mattresses made of Memoryfoam and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

Memory-Foam is an elastic foam that can remember its original shape. Hence the name.

Mattresses made of this material have a particularly long life and are very adaptable to the body. They are also very comfortable and relieve pressure.

However, the material needs some time to adapt to the body shape. As a result, the lying comfort only occurs after a few minutes. Especially for active sleepers this is not good.

Especially long lifetime
Comfortable and pressure-relieving

Slowly adapting to the body
Lying comfort only after a few minutes
Badly suited for active sleepers

What distinguishes orthopaedic mattresses made of latex foam and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

Mattresses made of this material are made of rubber and are made of synthetic, mixed and natural latex.

Because the mattress is free of noise, it does not disturb the night’s rest so easily. The mattress is also suitable for allergy sufferers, as it has a low susceptibility to mites.

Latex mattress

Initially, these types of mattresses have a slight inherent odour, but this disappears over time. Another disadvantage is that these mattresses are often very bulky and heavy.

Noise free
Low susceptibility to mites

light inherent odour
cumbersome and heavy

What makes gel foam orthopaedic mattresses stand out and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

Gel foam mattresses are filled with a viscous, heavy gel and function similar to waterbeds. However, they offer little support and are therefore not particularly suitable.

It is therefore more advisable to combine mattresses with a layer of foamed gel with a core of solid foam (e.g. cold foam). This ensures a perfect counterpressure and a good supporting effect.

These types of mattresses have a high durability. In addition, they react the same way to heat and cold. This means that this mattress remains equally soft in summer and winter and does not change.

The gel foam mattress can only be combined with high-quality slatted frames with narrow slat spacing. Otherwise the foam could get pressure points and be permanently damaged. This type of mattress is not suitable for people with a high body weight who like to sleep on their stomach.

Due to the superficial sinking in and the missing supporting effect of the lower foam layer, this could result in sagging of the middle of the body

high longevity
Reacts the same way in heat and cold

can only be combined with certain slatted frames
Are not suitable for persons with high body weight

What distinguishes orthopaedic mattresses made of cold foam and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

Cold foam mattresses are very point elastic. This means that the mattresses only give way where they are loaded, similar to memory foam.

Advantages of this material are its long life and it is easier to transport compared to others. In addition, this material insulates body heat very well.

cold foam mattress

A disadvantage is that this material is not suitable for people who sweat heavily at night. This mattress is also not suitable for overweight people.

You should also make sure that the slatted frame has no more than 5 cm distance between the rungs. This could damage the mattress.

long life span
easy to transport
Very good thermal insulation

It’s not for heavy sweaters
not people who are overweight
can only be combined with certain slatted frames

Purchase criteria: You can compare and rate orthopaedic mattresses based on these factors

In the following we want to show you what to look out for when buying an orthopaedic mattress.

These criteria are of great importance when comparing different mattresses:

  • Size
  • Material
  • Washability
  • Anti-allergic
  • Reference

In the following paragraphs we will go into these criteria in more detail.

Orthopaedic mattresses are available in almost all standard sizes. Therefore it is better to inform yourself about the size of your bed.

We have already listed the three most common sizes in this article. Before you buy your bed, find out what size mattress you need.

We have already explained the different materials of which mattresses are made in this article. Find out which material is best for you. There are also mattresses that combine different materials.

In the course of this article we have already dealt with some materials. Choose the material that seems most suitable for you.

Especially allergic persons should pay attention to the material. There are materials that are especially suitable for allergy sufferers.

Washability is an important issue for mattresses. Find out beforehand whether the mattress has a removable cover. This can then be washed in a standard washing machine.

In this article we will go into more detail later on how to wash the covers.

Here it depends on the material of which the mattress is made. Mattresses made of cold foam are particularly suitable for this.

These types of mattresses are particularly breathable and are particularly effective at wicking away moisture. The inside of the mattress therefore remains cool, dry and well ventilated.

These are operations that keep away household mites, which are usually responsible for the allergy. The cover of a mattress should also be washed regularly.

As already mentioned several times, an orthopedic mattress should have a removable cover. This can usually be washed in a standard washing machine. This is especially important for allergy sufferers.

To be able to adapt perfectly to the mattress, the cover should be elastic. Covers with stitching are elastic in all directions as opposed to woven covers. Covers with single-needle quilting are particularly high quality.

Trivia: Worth knowing facts about orthopaedic mattresses

How can I wash an orthopaedic mattress?

It is best if an orthopedic mattress has a removable cover. These covers can be washed in the washing machine at up to 60°C. Stains should be easy to remove.

From a size of 140 cm you should wash the cover halves alone. The entire cover can cause an imbalance in the washing machine in a standard 6kg machine, especially when wet.

If you do not have the opportunity to wash the cover at home, you can take the mattress to a dry cleaner. The costs for this always depend on the particular cleaning.

Do I need a special slatted frame for an orthopaedic mattress?

Basically you do not need a special slatted frame. But of course there are also special orthopaedic slatted frames.

Here you can decide between different models. Each one is tailored to a specific clinical picture, as well as size and weight.

A high-quality slatted frame can be individually adjusted. So you can adjust the degree of hardness and the head and foot sections to your needs.

In cooperation with an orthopaedic mattress, the slatted frame ensures a more relaxed sleep. The spine is not unnecessarily strained by changing sleeping positions. This guarantees a restful sleep.
