Advisor: Questions you should deal with before buying a pocket spring mattress

What does a pocket spring mattress cost?

Mattresses are available in all price ranges. In general, pocket spring mattresses have a good price-performance ratio. However, to do something good for your health, you should consider certain quality criteria, such as the number of springs and zones.
A pocket spring mattress in the size 90 x 200 cm is available for about 65€. However, you should be careful with such cheap models. Often these mattresses do not have a long lifespan and you will have to buy a new one after 1.2 years. The number of springs is usually too low, so that the mattress is quickly worn out.
With the high-quality pocket spring mattresses the price can also go up to 2000 € for the dimensions 90 x 200 cm. This already makes them one of those luxury mattresses that often have two pocket spring cores on top of each other.

The middle way is usually the right one. Every person sleeps about 24 years in his life. That is why it is important to find a mattress that suits you.

More important than the price is the quality and features of the pocket spring mattress:

high number of springs
at least three resting zones
pleasant hardness level
removable cover

Where can you buy a pocket spring mattress?

When buying a mattress you have the choice between a specialist shop or an online shop. Each variant offers different advantages and disadvantages.
If you are someone who would like to have a close look at the mattress beforehand or would like to try out a test bed, the first option is always a classic shop. If you prefer to shop on the Internet and want to be flexible in terms of time and space, online shopping offers many advantages.

Overall, buying online offers greater advantages. You can often get the mattresses at a lower price and do not have to worry about transport. With the take-back guarantee you can test the mattress at home and find out whether it is the right one for you.

Usually you buy the mattress directly in the online shop of the manufacturer. But beside the manufacturers there are other possibilities as for example amazon.de, ebay.de, Mattresses Concord or Ikea.

All pocket spring mattresses that we present to you on our site are provided with a link so that you can click on it as soon as you have found a mattress that meets your requirements.

For whom is a pocket spring mattress suitable?

Basically, a pocket spring mattress is suitable for all persons and sleeping positions, as they can adapt optimally to the individual body shape without losing their shape.

Any body weight
Every sleeping position
People with back problems
Night sweats

People who freeze quickly at night
People who sleep very softly

You can use them as stomach, back or side sleepers. Especially people who suffer from back problems can benefit from a pocket spring core. A pocket spring mattress compensates night sweats very well.

If you are constantly too warm when you sleep, then a pocket spring mattress may be just the thing for you. Thanks to its construction, the air inside can circulate and absorb heat. The mattress is thus ventilated.

You sleep much more restful. However, it also means that the mattress remains cool at all times. This is rather unpleasant for frostbites. In this case you can buy a mattress topper with warming properties.

What zones are there in pocket spring mattresses and what are their differences?

Pocket spring mattresses are available in various designs in zones. The higher the number of zones, the better the body is relieved. As a buyer, you are quickly overwhelmed when choosing the number of zones. To make your choice a little easier, take a look at the table and find out which zones are responsible for what.

As you can see, the zones repeat themselves from zone 5 on. This has the advantage that you can turn the mattress around and the sleep feeling does not change.

How many springs should a pocket spring mattress have and what are their differences?

The number of springs determines the degree of stability of the mattress. The number of springs is a quality feature and should not be underestimated. This means that the mattress should have at least 1000 springs to ensure a certain stability. The largest possible number of springs is approximately 2000 springs.
As the number of springs increases, the mattress becomes harder. However, this is necessary for a high point elasticity. Otherwise you would sink into the mattress, which would be rather harmful, especially for the back. However, the final degree of hardness has not yet been determined, so you can still choose the one that suits you best.

The higher the number of springs, the higher the quality of the mattress.

Can you also use a pocket spring mattress as an allergy sufferer?

As an allergy sufferer, one reacts very sensitively to house dust mites, which settle naturally in the mattress. Pocket spring mattresses are particularly susceptible to house dust mites.
Due to their breathable surface, the mites penetrate the mattress more easily. You should also be careful if animal materials such as pink hair are worked into the upholstery. These are also not suitable for allergy sufferers. In order to be able to enjoy the benefits of a
pocket spring mattress, there are certain covers – so-called anti-mite encasings. The mites are virtually “locked up” in the mattress. Since house dust mites do not only get stuck in the mattress, but also in the duvet and pillow, these should also be protected with an allergy cover.

How big should your pocket spring mattress be?

The size of the mattress depends mainly on your own needs. If you need a lot of space when sleeping, a larger mattress is better than a rather small model.

For couples, a pocket-sprung mattress from size 140 x 200 cm is recommended so that everyone can still enjoy freedom of sleep. But here too, your own needs are in the foreground. If both of you like to have plenty of space when sleeping, you should buy a larger mattress. A restful sleep is the basis for a successful day!

Which degree of hardness of a pocket spring mattress is the right one for you?

The degree of hardness of the pocket spring mattress is another important point that you need to clarify for yourself. One person prefers to sleep harder, the other prefers to sleep softer.
Pocket spring mattresses are among the somewhat harder mattresses. Even the softest model with H1 is slightly harder than other types of mattresses. So if you prefer to sleep very softly, a pocket spring mattress would be the wrong choice for you.

The basis for the right hardness is the own body weight. However, your own feelings should always play a role. If the degree of hardness appropriate for your weight is not comfortable for you, you should rather choose another one. After all, you should feel good and be able to sleep restfully.

What can you do if your partner needs a different degree of hardness than you?

In many pairs, the degree of hardness does not match. Be it through the different body weight or personal feelings. In order to ensure a restful sleep and not cause pain in the neck or back, one should not buy a mattress that is too soft or too hard for the sake of the partner.
Pocket spring mattresses are rarely available as a pair mattress. These have different degrees of hardness on the left and right. However, it is possible to buy two mattresses and later combine them with a mattress topper. This eliminates the unpleasant “visitor’s gap” and yet both have the mattress that suits their needs.

Another advantage of this variant is that you hardly notice your partner’s movements while sleeping, as each lies on a separate mattress.

Decision: What types of pocket spring mattresses are available and which one is right for you?

Basically one can distinguish between two different types of pocket spring mattresses:

  • Pocket spring mattresses
  • barrel pocket spring core mattresses

The difference between the two mattresses lies in the shape of the springs.

Depending on the demands you make on a mattress, one type is more suitable for you than the other. In the following section we would like to help you find out which type suits you best.

How is a pocket spring mattress constructed and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Pocket spring mattresses optimally support the body during sleep due to their good point elasticity.

In contrast to conventional spring mattresses, the steel springs of a pocket spring mattress are sewn into individual fabric pockets. Together they form the lying surface. To prevent lying on the bare springs, the mattress is additionally upholstered with foam, wool, cotton or silk. A cover, which is pulled over the entire mattress, protects the mattress from external influences.

High point elasticity
Long service life

More expensive than conventional spring mattresses
Staying cold

A pocket spring core adapts perfectly to the body. The point elasticity means that the mattress only sinks in where the weight rests. This means that you do not sink completely into the mattress and the body is relieved. Due to the sewn-in fabric pockets, the mattress does not make any unpleasant noises. If you move a lot at night or have a light sleep, this is a special advantage

How is a barrel pocket spring mattress constructed and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Bunny pocket spring mattresses offer even greater comfort. If you place a lot of value on an optimal sleeping experience, this mattress is a great option.

Just like the simple pocket spring mattress, the steel springs are sewn into individual fabric bags. The difference between the two mattresses lies in the shape of the springs. The springs of the barrel pocket spring mattress have a bulbous shape. This makes them even more flexible and thus offers even more comfort and stability.

High comfort
Good stability
Long service life

High price range

The point elasticity of barrel pocket spring mattresses is even higher than that of normal pocket spring mattresses. The body thus enjoys optimum support. Therefore, barrel pocket springs are particularly suitable for heavy persons, as the bulbous steel springs do not yield so easily.

Due to their bulbous springs, barrel pocket spring mattresses offer even better lying and sleeping comfort.

Purchase criteria: You can compare and evaluate pocket spring mattresses based on these factors

In the following we would like to show you the factors you can use to compare and evaluate pocket spring mattresses. This will make it easier for you to decide whether a particular mattress is suitable for you or not.

In summary, these are:

  • Type of pocket spring mattress
  • Size
  • Liegezonen
  • Hardness grade
  • number of springs
  • Cleanability
  • Suitable for allergy sufferers
  • Oekotex-approved

In the following paragraphs you can read what the individual purchase criteria are and how you can classify them.

Type of pocket spring mattress

We have already described the two different types of pocket spring mattresses above. Nevertheless, we would like to present the advantages of each type again so that it is easier for you to decide which type of pocket spring mattress suits you best.

Did you know that pocket spring mattresses with bellied springs have an even better flexible point elasticity?
This allows the mattress to adapt specifically to your body.

Basically, the pocket spring mattress and the barrel pocket spring mattress differ only in the shape of the individual springs. While the normal pocket spring core has a waisted shape, the barrel pocket spring core is bulbous. As a result, the barrel pocket spring mattress is even more stable than normal pocket spring mattresses and therefore has a longer service life.

However, they are somewhat more expensive in price. Due to their bulbous shape, they are more suitable for somewhat heavier persons, as they do not give way as easily as simple pocket springs.

When choosing the right size, you are often spoilt for choice. Here you have to listen to your own needs and decide which size fits you best.

For children it is advisable to buy a rather smaller mattress, as they simply do not need that much space yet. There are often different lengths to choose from, so you should be able to find the right mattress size for every cot.

With adults it is more a question of your own preference and whether you share a bed with a partner or sleep alone. Most people prefer a large mattress on which they can spread out as they wish. Therefore, the best selling size is 140 x 200 cm. If you share the bed with your partner and need a lot of space to sleep, it is recommended to buy the mattress 1-2 sizes larger.

If you are particularly tall, you will of course want the mattress to be sufficiently long in addition to its width. Many manufacturers therefore offer mattresses up to 220 cm long.

As described in detail above, there are different reclining zones to choose from. To make your choice a little easier, we would like to go into this again.

Most mattresses sold have seven lying zones. This is because the mattress can be turned without losing a particular zone. As the zones are repeated from the hip area onwards, you sleep restful at all times.

Did you know that pocket spring mattresses are primarily suitable for abdominal and back resting?
This is the only way to distribute the weight evenly on the mattress and to create an optimal point elasticity.

In principle, three zones in a mattress are sufficient. This sufficiently relieves the main areas of the body. However, if you attach great importance to being able to turn the mattress so that it does not get cold so quickly, you are better off with a 5 or 7 zone mattress.

Hardness grade

The degree of hardness is also an important criterion, as it contributes significantly to the quality of sleep. There are different degrees of hardness to choose from, depending on your body weight.

Which degree of hardness is the right one for your weight, we have already listed above. However, we would like to emphasize once again that subjective feeling also plays an important role. If you feel that your appropriate degree of hardness is too soft or too hard, change to another one. It is important to know that pocket spring mattresses are a little harder than other mattresses. It is therefore possible that the same degree of hardness is harder in a pocket spring mattress.

number of springs

The number of springs is another criterion that should not be completely ignored, as a high number of springs ensures a certain stability.

The higher the number of springs, the higher the stability and point elasticity of the mattress. Especially if you are a little heavier, a higher number of springs is recommended, as this prevents the formation of recumbents.

At the same time, the hardness of the mattress increases with the number of springs. So if you don’t like sleeping hard, it is not so important that the number of springs is a little less.

As many pocket spring mattresses do not always state the number of springs, you should first inform yourself about the general degree of hardness of the mattress, as this also determines the number of springs.

Especially with mattresses it is important that there is the possibility to wash the cover to ensure a certain bed hygiene. Therefore you should always make sure that the cover is removable and washable at the same time. However, this is the case with most pocket spring mattresses.

Optimal is a washing temperature of about 60 degrees. At this temperature most bacteria are killed. In a freshly washed and covered bed it also sleeps much better!

You should get a pocket spring mattress with a removable cover. This way you can clean the mattress easily and regularly.

Suitable for allergy sufferers

Especially for allergy sufferers, it is important to know whether the mattress is suitable for them or not, as they react particularly strongly to house dust mites.

Most mattress manufacturers state in their description whether the mattress is suitable for allergy sufferers or not. For example, a removable and washable cover is a special indication for allergy sufferers whether a mattress is suitable for them at all. Washing the cover already removes most of the mites.

However, the mites also settle inside the mattress, which is why a special anti-mite encasing is the better solution for most allergy sufferers.

Oekotex seal

The Oekotex seal provides information as to whether there are harmful substances in the mattress.

Since harmful substances in a mattress are not beneficial to anyone’s health, you should make sure that your chosen pocket spring mattress has the Oekotex seal. This seal is only awarded to mattresses that are free of harmful substances. However, many pocket spring mattresses already carry this seal, so it should not be a problem to find a suitable, pollutant-free pocket spring mattress.

In the long run you will do your body some good with it!

Trivia: Worth knowing facts about pocket spring mattresses

How do I clean and care for my pocket spring mattress properly?

In order to enjoy your pocket spring mattress for a long time, it should be well cared for and cleaned. With a few tricks, this is quickly done. The main care is to turn the mattress regularly.

You should turn them about every one or two months. Remove the cover and put the mattress on its side. This is important so that the pocket spring mattress is well ventilated and the remaining moisture evaporates. It is best to open the window. This way, there is a good exchange of air and the mattress dries faster.

If the mattress is well aired, the actual turning comes. You turn it once completely so that the head and foot ends are exchanged. This gives you a new lying surface and prevents the formation of hollows. This extends the life of the mattress considerably.

When turning the mattress over, it is a good idea to wash the cover at the same time. You should do this about every 3 months, as everyone sweats in their sleep and the cover is only protected by a thin sheet. However, you should refrain from vacuuming the pocket spring core or using cleaning agents.

When is the time to replace my mattress?

After a certain period of time, each mattress should be replaced, as the lying comfort is no longer given. It is also important to dispose of an old mattress for health reasons.

Every mattress has reached the end of its life at some point. After five years at the latest you should take a closer look at your mattress. Does it already have recumbent hollows? Is there any visible damage to the mattress such as mould or protruding springs? Does the mattress smell musty? If so, it is time for a new mattress!

The service life varies between 5-14 years, depending on the price range. Cheap mattresses should therefore be disposed of after 8 years at the latest. Higher quality mattresses, on the other hand, can be used for 10-14 years.

The right care also plays an important role. If the mattress has never been turned and the cover has never been washed, for example because it is not removable, the mattress should be replaced after about 5 years. Hygiene in bed would no longer be adequate, which in the long term can lead to illness.

Which slatted frame is suitable for my pocket spring mattress?

Simple slatted frames are particularly recommended for pocket spring mattresses. With an adjustable slatted frame, it can no longer adapt to the body properly.

If the slatted frame is very strongly adjusted, the springs can be damaged. They would take up an unnatural position, which shortens the life span.

Another variant is to place the pocket spring mattress on a pallet bed. As it is particularly suitable for a flat surface, this would be a great alternative to a normal bed. One should only make sure that the pallet bed offers sufficient ventilation from below. To protect the mattress, it is best to place felt or fleece on the pallets so that the springs do not rub through.

5 tips for better sleep

A healthy and restful sleep is important for your body, but also for the psyche. Are you often tired in the morning, feel flabby or don’t fall asleep at all? Often it is our behaviour that has a negative influence on our sleep.

That is why I have put together 5 tips for you to help you find restful sleep.

Do not eat large meals before going to bed. This keeps the body too busy with digestion and prevents it from resting. It is better to eat a small, light meal such as yoghurt or apple if you feel hungry before going to bed.
Get enough exercise throughout the day. Sitting in the office during the day and sitting down on the sofa in front of the TV at home after a hard day’s work will not help you sleep. Physical exertion will do you good, not only when sleeping. Why not take a walk in the evening or ride your bike to work?
Do not take your mobile phone or laptop to bed with you. The blue light will irritate your nerve cells. This makes you feel more alert. Your biological sleep rhythm is pushed back, as if you were having a coffee before going to bed. So it is better to put away your mobile phone or laptop for 1-2 hours before you go to bed. Instead, take a book with you to bed.
End the day consciously. Do not take any negative thoughts with you to bed or think too much about the next day. It might help you to write down your thoughts or important tasks to clear your mind. Or take a bath, do a round of yoga or relaxation exercises. Everything is allowed as long as it helps you relax!
Develop a sleep rhythm. Go to bed at the same time every night and get up at the same time in the morning. That way your body will get used to the times. Of course this is not always compatible with everyday life, but you should try to keep these times as often as possible.
