Advisor: Questions you should deal with before buying a cantilever

What exactly is a cantilever chair anyway?

A cantilever chair is a chair that only stands on two legs.
However, these legs join together on the floor. This means that they form a rectangle at the bottom, which gives the cantilever chair its stability. This is called a skid frame.

The missing “back legs” cause the chair to bounce. This is explained in more detail in the purchase criterion “movement mechanics”.

For whom is the cantilever chair suitable?

The cantilever chair is suitable for anyone who wants to sit comfortably and without strain on the back. It can be used, for example, as a visitor, applicant or conference chair in companies or as a dining chair in private homes.
Why? The design is very stylish and timeless and the cantilever chair is very space-saving. It can be stacked to quickly create space for other events. In addition, the back is relieved by the suspension of the seat, which also makes longer sitting comfortable.

Did you know that cantilever chairs have even been used by various architectural greats?
Both Marcel Breuer, Ludwig van der Rohe and Le Corbusier had the swinging armchair in their program. But it was above all the Bauhaus that made the cantilever chair popular

This swivel chair is not suitable for everyday use at the workplace (especially in the office), as the recommended sitting time of usually 4 hours should not be exceeded.

Alternatively, however, this makes it suitable for the desk in the home office.

How much does a cantilever chair cost?

A cantilever chair is inexpensive to purchase compared to other ergonomic chairs, as all accessories (armrests, headrests, etc.) are usually dispensed with.
A simple cantilever chair costs on average between 30 € and 100 € (everything is open at the top).
How much you will ultimately spend is of course determined by your budget. But quality and equipment also determine the price.
Models with armrests cost on average between € 60 and € 250.
However, if you wish, you can also spend over €1,000 on a luxury cantilever chair.

How long should one sit on the cantilever chair?

You wonder how long you can sit on a cantilever chair without any complaints?
Fortunately, most manufacturers give a recommended sitting time. You can use this as a guide to find out which office chair suits you best.

In addition to the right office equipment, an ergonomically good chair and desk, it is also important that the employee trains his muscular health. This is especially true for employees who are primarily sitting and immobile during working hours.
If back pain already exists, it is important to train not only the superficial muscles, but also the deep muscle groups. A well-trained physiotherapist can help with the training plan and intensive supervision leads to very good results.

If you need a desk chair for work, the recommended sitting time should be 8 hours or even more. However, if you will spend little time in the chair, a cantilever chair would also be an option.

Here the average recommended sitting time is 4 hours. After this time, damage to health can no longer be fully excluded.

Decision: What types of cantilever chairs are there and which one is right for you?

Basically one can distinguish between three different types of cantilever chairs, also called swinging chairs:

  • Cantilever chair with armrest
  • Cantilever without armrest
  • Swing chair

Swivel chairs are becoming increasingly popular due to their seating comfort and modern appearance. They are available in many sizes and shapes, basically they are available as cantilever chairs with or without armrests or as rocking chairs.

All of these types of swinging chairs have their advantages and disadvantages in use. Depending on what you are looking for and what you want to use it for, one of the three types is more suitable for your needs.

In the following section we would therefore like to introduce you to the three types of cantilever chairs and help you to find out which of them is the right one for you. To this end, we present the above-mentioned types in a clear and concise manner and explain in detail their advantages and disadvantages.

What distinguishes a cantilever chair with armrest and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Cantilever chairs with armrests have an innovative and distinctive design and the unique combination of comfortable sitting with the many advantages of a swinging armchair. This type of cantilever chair has only two legs instead of four, as the front legs merge seamlessly into the floor frame. In addition, cantilever chairs with armrests offer additional support and comfort thanks to the lateral armrests on which the seated person can rest.

Because the rear chair legs are missing, the backrest of the cantilever chair springs back slightly. This swinging function encourages the seated person to move, and the slight rocking has a relaxing effect on the back muscles. Even when sitting for long periods of time, you will not suffer back pain on cantilever chairs.

Ideal for medical practices and other facilities with waiting areas
Partly stackable

Not suitable for very overweight people due to limited seating area

The seating comfort and the attractive design make the cantilever chair with armrest a popular seating furniture in waiting areas of medical practices and other medical facilities. The biggest disadvantage of a cantilever chair with armrest is that the chair offers a seating area limited by the armrests. It is therefore not suitable for very overweight people.

What distinguishes a cantilever chair without armrest and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Cantilever chairs without armrests look very similar to their siblings, the cantilever chairs with armrests. They also have no leg chairs at the back and generate the typical vibration when sitting. However, cantilever chairs without armrests are narrower and therefore more space-saving, as the seat surface is not limited to the left and right by armrests.

High seating comfort through vibration

Modern appearance

Space-saving without armrest (usually narrower design)
Ideal for conference rooms, meeting rooms, offices
Partly stackable

The biggest disadvantage of a cantilever chair without armrest is that the chair cannot support more than 110-120 kg body weight. Therefore the chair is not suitable for people with an extraordinary amount of muscle mass or for overweight people. Because the cantilever chair encourages sitting straight and you cannot “cuddle in”, it is probably not very comfortable as a living room or TV chair.

What distinguishes a swivel chair and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Anyone looking for an extremely comfortable and cosy piece of seating furniture, for example for the living room, will greatly appreciate the swinging armchair. Swinging armchairs are designed similarly to cantilever chairs with armrests. However, the seat surface is lower, slightly inclined backwards, and the entire seating area is upholstered. Many cantilever chairs have an integrated upholstery in the head area, for most of them you can also buy a stool.

High seating comfort
Cozy look
Ideal for at home

Requires more space
Not stackable

This makes the swinging chair ideal for putting your legs up at the end of the day. The modern and comfortable design of swinging armchairs does not only bring swinging into sitting but also into the room in which the armchair is set up – be it

The only disadvantages of the swing armchair are that it requires more space than cantilever chairs and is not stackable. It is therefore unlikely to be used where many chairs are to be placed next to each other.

Purchase criteria: You can compare and rate cantilever chairs based on these factors

In the following we show you which criteria you can use to compare and evaluate cantilever chairs. This will make it easier for you to get an overview and decide on a suitable product.

In summary, these criteria are as follows:

  • Equipment
  • Movement mechanics
  • Optics
  • Resilience
  • Dimensions
  • Price
  • Covers and their cleaning

In the following you can read what the respective criteria are and find out why it makes sense for you to purchase a cantilever chair under these aspects or not.

Normally, the cantilever chair has no other equipment. However, there are some models where additional armrests are fitted.

These should provide more comfort on the one hand, but also security. They also support correct sitting. The resulting change in design is of course a matter of taste.

A cantilever chair with armrests would be suitable for the home office, for example.

There are also swivel chairs with a lumbar support. This is a bulge in the back area, which is primarily intended to stabilise the lumbar region.

Movement mechanics

Office chairs have different movement mechanisms. The cantilever chair uses the rocker mechanism.

Due to the body weight the seat surface gives way slightly. The backrest remains at the same angle to the seat surface, but moves with it. This relieves the back and prevents unhealthy, rigid sitting.

Did you know that the shape of the cantilever chair’s bottom runner prevents it from tipping over?
Due to the given statics of the floor skid, the force generated when sitting down is diverted to the entire skids via the tension in the front legs.
The skids, which run up to the rear end of the chair and thus create a wide floor support, prevent the chair from tipping over.

Some models have a backrest pressure regulator for optimal adjustment.

The cantilever chair captivates with its timeless, stylish design. This is created by the missing “back legs” of the chair. If you get scared now, do not worry. This does not affect the stability.

Nevertheless, there may be a feeling of tipping, but this is perceived differently. Rest assured, you are not really tilting.

The materials are mostly imitation leather or simple fabric. Chromed metal parts or wood are combined with it.

The average maximum load capacity of the cantilever chair is 120 kg – 130 kg.

If you are looking for an office chair that is more resilient, I recommend an XXL office chair. This chair can withstand a mass of up to 160 kg.

The average length of a swinging chair is 40 cm – 50 cm, width 40 cm – 45 cm and height 90 cm – 100 cm. The seat height is about 45 cm – 50 cm.

You have already read how much a cantilever chair costs on average. In this point, we will now go into more detail about what you can expect for what price.

In general, it is difficult to define a price limit. Here are a few examples for you:

For example, cantilever chairs with a steel frame are available from as little as 15 €. If it is made of chrome-plated steel, you have to calculate with 35 €. Stainless steel frames, however, are usually available from 100 €. If this is additionally chromed, the chair can also cost several thousand euros.

The following table gives you an overview of the prices by material:

The situation is similar with the cover. Microfibre covered swinging chairs are available from as little as 15 €. Cantilever chairs with a seat with imitation leather are also quite cheap for 30 €. Chairs with genuine leather covers start at 90 €. However, the quality is also decisive!

Of course, there are different brands and manufacturers of swinging chairs. Unknown manufacturers sell already from 15 €. While cantilever chairs by noble designers sometimes cost 4,000 €.

Please also note the additional equipment. For example, armrests, lumbar and neck supports may be fitted. Whereby the latter tend to be used less. Cantilever chairs with armrests are available from just 60 €. If you want to have armrests and a lumbar support, you can set yourself to approx. 220 €. Of course, you will have to consider all the criteria that are important to you for a cantilever chair in context in order to be able to orient yourself in terms of price.

Covers and their cleaning

Due to the simple design, the cantilever chair is easy to clean. Of course, the covers of the backrest and seat also play a role. These are optionally available in leather, fabric, etc.
