Guide: Questions you should consider before buying a diffuser
What are diffusers suitable for?
Diffusers can be used for many different purposes. However, they are mainly used for aromatherapy and scent changes in the air, but can also function as humidifiers to some extent.
Aromatherapy comes from the Asian region and is a widely used method to promote health. Through the use of essential oils, it can especially help prevent headaches, colds and stress.
With the help of essential or scented oils, diffusers can be used to cover unpleasant odours in the air. The oils are used by spraying into the air and are then absorbed by the cells. This allows the odour to remain in the air for several hours.
In general, diffusers help to create a better indoor climate and atmosphere. This can promote concentration and help to counteract stress and illness.
If you would like to know more about aromatherapy, we have another video for you here:
Because most diffusers use water and heat it up and release it into the air in the form of mist, you can also use it as a humidifier. However, it is usually only sufficient to humidify small rooms.
Do aroma diffusers help with health problems?
Aroma diffusers can help prevent or even combat health problems. They are particularly good for wellness, which can reduce stress levels and thus susceptibility to disease.
However, allergy sufferers must be careful when using aroma diffusers, as the use of different oils can lead to an allergic reaction.
Headaches often occur when a person suffers from too much stress. Diffusers promote relaxation and can therefore counteract headaches.
Aromatherapy: All important questions and answers
Since a diffuser also functions as a humidifier, it can help fight dry mucous membranes, which are limited in their function. Through this function, diffusers can also fight viruses, because they feel especially comfortable in dry air.
How do I set up a diffuser correctly?
In general it is a good idea to place your diffuser on a side table or similar. However, there are many different factors to consider when determining the correct location of a diffuser.
First and foremost, it is important to place the diffuser as far away as possible from electrical appliances, as these could be damaged by the water vapour.
Also, you should never place diffusers near wood. The wood would absorb the water vapour and then either warp or swell.
Diffusers should also be kept away from children and pets, as they can easily be injured. You should therefore place it in a place that is not easy for either of them to reach.
It is also important that the base is stable and waterproof. Fog naturally spreads around the diffuser and can damage materials that are not suitable for water or cause slipping on surfaces that are too smooth. In addition, the base should not be shaky, so that the diffuser cannot tip over quickly.
It is therefore best to place it on an occasional table, which can be positioned slightly differently and is not
Another possibility would be the windowsill, but especially in winter there is the problem that the water vapour would deposit on the cold window.
How much does a diffuser cost?
The price of a diffuser can vary greatly depending on its size and function. In principle, however, the price range is around 15 € to 50 €. In addition, the purchase costs of the oils are added later.
The type of diffuser, ultrasonic or waterless, has little effect on the price. On the other hand, the capacity and additional functions play a major role when it comes to price.
In general, it is logical that branded products are more expensive than diffusers from no-name companies.
Where can I buy diffusers?
You can find diffusers mainly in online shops or on the site of the manufacturer itself. However, if you don’t want to buy diffusers on the Internet, you can also find them in many electronics stores.
According to our research, the most relevant stores are those where you can search for diffusers:
All diffusers that we will introduce to you will have a link to one of these shops. So that you can access them as soon as you find a device you like.
What alternatives are there to aroma diffusers?
If you do not want to buy an aroma diffuser for various reasons, you can fall back on three other alternatives.
Each of these possibilities focuses on a specific function of the diffuser, namely air humidification, fragrance and air purification.
In the following figure we offer you a more detailed overview of the alternatives of aroma diffusers:
Decision: What types of diffusers are there, and which one is right for you?
In general, one can distinguish between two different types of aroma diffusers:
- Ultraschall Diffuser
- Waterless diffusers
Performance and features vary depending on the model, which have specific advantages and disadvantages.
Depending on what and where you want to use the diffuser, other types will work best for you. In the next section we will help you find the right type of diffuser for you.
For this purpose, we present the above-mentioned versions in more detail and show their advantages and disadvantages in each case.
What distinguishes an ultrasonic diffuser and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
The ultrasonic diffuser first converts electrical vibrations into mechanical vibrations. This breaks the oil into microparticles.
In addition, the diffuser contains a container that is filled with water and a few drops of oil. A disc is rotated in this container, which splits the oil and distributes the aromas in the room through the resulting mist.
More choice and variants
Also works as humidified
Low oil consumption
Dilutes the oils
Reduces the room temperature
Most diffusers today, use this ultrasonic technique.
What distinguishes a waterless diffuser and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
With a waterless diffuser the oils remain undiluted and therefore have a more intensive effect. A pump uses compressed air to convert the oil into microparticles. These particles are then released into the air either as a fine spray or mist.
Does not require water
High oil concentration
Uses natural oils
Runs on rechargeable batteries
Fewer models and selection
Greater oil consumption
No air humidification
Waterless diffusers are mainly used in the therapeutic field due to their intensity.
Purchase criteria: You can compare and rate diffusers based on these factors
In the following we will show you which aspects you can use to decide between the multitude of different diffusers.
The factors by which you can compare the diffusers include
- size and weight
- Maximum fragrancing time
- Usable oils
- Controllable LEDs
In the following paragraphs we describe in more detail what is important for the individual criteria.
size and weight
Aroma diffusers are generally small devices that are very handy and easy to use. Due to their small size, the diffusers do not weigh much. When unfilled, they usually weigh less than 1 kilogram.
Depending on their capacity, aroma diffusers can become somewhat heavier when filled. Therefore, they should be placed on a stable surface.
Therefore, diffusers can be placed perfectly on desks, storage tables and chests of drawers. They can also be easily rearranged if required.
The capacity describes how much water and oil fits into the container. This then determines for how long the diffuser can operate continuously and what size of room it can serve.
In general, the larger the filling quantity, the longer the aroma diffuser can run and the larger the room can be. You can also put more aroma oil in larger diffusers.
On average, most diffusers have a capacity of 100 to 400 millilitres. However, they can also be found smaller or larger.
Maximum fragrancing time
The maximum fragrance time of an aroma diffuser describes how long it can run continuously with one filling quantity. As mentioned above, this depends on the capacity of the diffuser.
With many diffusers there is the possibility to set an interval mode. The diffuser changes between steam mode and pause. This mode helps to get along longer with one water ration
Basically it can be said that 50 millilitres of water correspond to about one hour of undisturbed running time.
There are two different types of oils that can be used for diffusers. These are essential or scented oils.
Essential oils are obtained from plant ingredients, such as lavender. These natural components have a healing effect, which is why they are often used in the therapeutic field.
However, essential oils are not water-soluble and usually leave oily residues. Fragrance oils, or also perfume oils, are synthetically produced. Therefore they do not have any health-promoting effect.
It is important to follow the manufacturer’s recommendation on which oil to use, because in the worst case, using the wrong oil can cause the diffuser to fail.
In contrast to essential oils, scented oils are water-soluble and leave hardly any residues.
The majority of all diffusers have LED lighting. This should help to create a comfortable atmosphere in the room.
On average, the diffusers have four to seven different colour shades. The lighting can then either be adjusted in a colour change mode or set to a specific colour. This function also allows you to use the diffuser as a night light.
Trivia: Worth knowing facts about diffusers
With how much oil should I fill the diffuser?
How much oil you use for your diffuser will of course vary depending on your preference and the type of diffuser. In general, however, with ultrasonic diffusers you should use 1-2 drops of scented oil per 100 ml water.
With ultrasonic diffusers you should first use less and less oil to avoid overdosing. If after half an hour of using the diffuser the smell is too weak, you can add another 1 or 2 drops of the fragrance oil.
For allergy sufferers there is also the possibility to operate the diffuser without any fragrance oil and only with water. So you can use the device without any problems and provide a better room climate.
Waterless diffusers, on the other hand, use pre-filled bottles that are simply inserted into the diffuser.
Should I use warm or cold water for the diffuser?
In general, you can simply use tap water for the diffuser. To avoid lime residue, it is better to fill filtered or distilled water into the diffuser.
It is very important that you always fill your diffuser with cold water. Otherwise, using hot water may damage the unit.
You should also always use new water after the diffuser has been idle for a few days, as germs can form in old water. These germs would then get into the air through the diffuser and be spread around the room.
How do I clean a diffuser?
Basically, you should wipe your diffuser after each use or at least once a week and clean it roughly. To clean the diffuser properly, you should do a deep clean about once a month.
During the intermediate cleaning you first pour out the excess water. Then you take a moistened kitchen sponge with a little washing-up liquid and wipe the inside and outside of the diffuser with it.
To remove the soap residue, wipe the diffuser first with a damp cloth and then with a dry cloth. Finally, clean the chip with a cotton swab moistened with alcohol.
Here is a video, which also shows you more precisely how you should clean your diffuser:
For deep cleaning, fill the diffuser halfway with water and add a few drops of white wine vinegar or some descaling agent. Then leave the appliance running for 10 – 15 minutes. When you have turned the diffuser off, clean it as if it were an intermediate cleaning.
