Guide: Questions you should consider before buying a bar lock
What is a bar lock?
The bar lock is an additional lock and special box lock with metal bars that usually run up and down and end in lock cases. It increases the protection against burglars.
Bar locks occupy the full height of the door on the inside and make it more difficult to push in and pick up. In addition, espagnolette locks lock vertically, which also secures the door on the closing side.
You can upgrade almost any door with them. Above all, a bar lock is used to securely lock doors and windows, but it can also be used for furniture, bicycles, mobile homes and more.
With most bar locks, an additional lock is usually installed in the middle of the door leaf. However, with bar locks, the current lock on the door can also be replaced by a new one.
How does a bar lock work?
First and foremost, it is important to know that there are two different functions for bar locks: The bar lock for doors and windows works differently than the bar lock for cabinets.
The function of a bar lock for doors is simple. There are no further distinctions between espagnolette locks for front doors or apartment doors.
Once the door lock is used, this immediately affects the locking of the bar lock.
Usually, the bar lock can be locked or unlocked using the additional lock or the new lock. The additional/new lock now has two bars, one going up and the other going down. Both bar ends end in holders.
Each time the door is locked, the rods extend in both directions and are locked in the holders. This fixes the bars above and below the door, giving it additional support so that it cannot be pushed in or levered out.
As soon as the door is unlocked again, the rods come out of the holders and return to their initial position. The bar lock also works in the same way for windows.
With cabinets, on the other hand, the rods are turned. Instead of the brackets there are hooks at the ends here, which are turned when locking and are placed around a metal pin. The metal pin keeps the door closed and is located both at the top and bottom of the cabinet.
What are the advantages of a bar lock?
A bar lock has many advantages, it offers increased protection against burglars, a bar lock can be installed in almost every door and it can be used for windows, gates and doors as well as for furniture.
The fact that bar locks are usually directly visible from the outside makes them a deterrent to burglars, because they make their work very difficult.
With their vertical bars, bar locks prevent windows and doors from being easily forced open from the outside.
Even a small hole in the window pane of a window would not be enough for a burglar to get in.
Furthermore, bar locks can also secure furniture. This is particularly useful in commercial or business areas, for example, for medicines, chemicals or sensitive documents. However, it can also simply be used to protect a cupboard door, desk or display case at home.
Bar locks are very practical because you can install them on almost any door, whether the door can be opened from inside or outside. In addition, the material of the door does not play a big role for a bar lock, no matter if it is a wooden door, plastic door or metal door, the bar lock always works.
Bar locks are particularly suitable for double leaf doors and old building doors due to their extraordinary design. Thanks to the bar doors it is not necessary to renew the door completely in order to guarantee a high protection against burglary.
How much does a bar lock cost?
There is a wide price range between the different bar locks. Depending on the quality and model of the bar locks, the cost varies.
The range can be from about 95 to 440 euros, and for some locks you have to buy a set of bars, which can range from about 40 to 130 euros.

Decision: What types of bar locks are there, and which one is right for you?
If you want to buy a bar lock there are two alternatives you can choose between.
- A bar lock with two securing points
- A bar lock with three securing points
The number of securing points of the two different bar locks each have advantages and disadvantages. Depending on what you prefer and what you want to use the bar lock for, a different type is suitable for you. With the following section we would like to make the decision easier for you.
What distinguishes a bar lock with two securing points and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
A bar lock with two securing points is secured at both the top and bottom. It can be used flexibly even with smaller door and window dimensions and is therefore suitable for everyone.
Of course a bar lock with three securing points offers even greater protection than one with two securing points.
Can also be used for smaller doors/windows
Two securing points
More unsafe than with three securing points
What distinguishes a bar lock with three securing points and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
The bar lock with three securing points offers a higher level of protection, mainly due to the three securing points. The additional latches are attached to the top, bottom and sides of the door.
The only disadvantage of this model is the additional space required at the door/window. Therefore this model is not an option for everyone.
Three securing points
Requires more space
Purchase criteria: You can compare and rate bar locks based on these factors
In the following we will show you on the basis of which aspects you can decide between the multitude of bar locks.
The criteria you can use to compare the bar locks include
In the following paragraphs we will explain to you what is important for the individual criteria.
A distinction is made between:
- Keyed alike
- Different locking
Normally, locks for bar locks are always different, i.e. one key unlocks a lock. If you buy two different locks, one key opens one lock and another key opens the other.
It follows that the key from the first bar lock does not fit on the second one and vice versa. Keyed alike means that you can use one key for several locks. The advantage is that you only need one key for all locks.
It does not matter where the cylinders are installed, as long as they are keyed alike, you can open and close all keyed alike locks with one key.
Furthermore, many sellers also offer articles with the possibility to combine the same locking function, so that you can, for example, unlock the garage door with only one key in addition to the bar lock.
An electric bar lock works thanks to batteries, which means it has an alarm function and thus provides more security.
Although bar locks offer great protection against burglary even without batteries, batteries can still turn bar locks into an alarm system in an emergency.
When buying a bar lock, the following question arises: Does the door open to the left or right? This depends on the hinge type (the side where the hinges are located). A distinction is made between left opening doors (DIN left) and right opening doors (DIN right).
DIN or to determine the opening direction of doors is very easy. First of all, stand in front of your door so that you can see the hinges. If the hinges are on the left side of the door, your door opens to the left (DIN left) and if the hinges are on the right side of the door, your door opens to the right (DIN right).
To give you a better idea, we have selected a suitable video with instructions on how to determine the correct door opening direction.
Another purchase criterion is the colour, which must not be neglected even when it comes to safety issues.
It is important that you are clear about what you want to signal with the colour. In the following table we list two strategies with colour recommendations.
In your considerations regarding the material of the bar lock, you can decide according to your personal preferences. Bar locks are very flexible and compatible with all materials.
You can usually find out what material a bar lock is made of in the product description.
