Advisor: Questions you should deal with before buying a crossbar lock

For whom is a crossbolt lock suitable?

A cross-bolt lock is one of the most effective ways to protect an apartment or house from burglary.

If you do not trust your normal door lock, or if you want to secure your home additionally, then the cross bolt lock is an optimal solution.

Ideally, you can also fit the crossbar lock afterwards and thus decide on additional security at a later date.

A crossbolt lock is therefore suitable for all those who want to increase their security at home.

How does a crossbar lock work?

The cross bar is attached to the inside of your door with a latch. It gives your door extra stability and prevents unauthorised persons from opening it. The latch extends across the entire width of the door and is not visible from the outside.
Burglars are usually not prepared for such situations, as they are used to picking door locks in seconds. If they then discover that an additional cross bolt has been installed, they usually abandon the attempted break-in quickly.

The door can only be opened slightly during burglary, but not enough to reach the crossbar from outside.

So burglars have almost no chance to get into the apartment.

What does a crossbar lock cost?

There is a wide price range between the different crossbars. Depending on quality and size, the cost varies. The range can be from about 100 to 250 Euros.
Cheap crossbars start at 100 euros, although it should of course be noted that branded crossbars are more expensive than “no name” products. Other factors that influence the price are the type of cylinder and materials.
In general, attention should be paid to a balanced price-performance ratio and the crossbar quality should be adapted to the security requirements.

Where can I buy a crossbolt lock?

Crossbolt locks are available in specialist shops and department stores as well as in many online shops. In addition, it is possible to order crossbar locks directly from your local locksmith.
According to our research, these online shops sell most of the crossbar locks:

ebay.com
amazon.com

All crossbar locks that we present to you on our site have a link to at least one of these shops. If you have found a suitable bolt that you like, you can strike right away.

What alternatives are there to the crossbolt lock?

There are no alternatives that offer the same security as a crossbolt lock. But what also makes your home more secure is the burglar-proof bar lock.
However, if you are looking for a cheaper alternative, you can also choose an additional door lock. Here there is no cross bar to stabilize the entire door. The additional lock is only attached to the door and serves as an additional lock, but it can only be opened from the inside.

Decision: What types of crossbar locks are there and which one is right for you?

Basically four different types can be distinguished:

  • Cross bolt lock lockable from the inside
  • Cross bolt lock lockable from outside
  • Electric crossbolt lock
  • Cross bolt lock with push button

The advantages and disadvantages of these are explained in the following paragraphs to make your decision easier.

What distinguishes a crossbolt lock that can be locked from the inside and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

As the name suggests, these crossbolt locks can only be locked from the inside. These crossbolts should not be used for house entrance doors if several people live in the household. If the bolt is locked, it cannot be opened from the outside.

Advantages

cheap
Well suited for doors that are not used very often
Simplicity

Disadvantages

not suitable for frequently used doors
unlockable when leaving the house

What distinguishes a crossbolt lock that can be locked from the outside and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

This type of cross bolt lock is particularly suitable for frequently used doors, such as apartment entrance doors. Usually these bolts are connected to the cylinder lock, which means that as soon as the door is locked, the cylinder also closes. Thus the house or apartment is optimally secured when it is left.

However, security is not only provided as soon as you are away from home, but you can also lock the latch from the inside without locking out family members.

This type of bar is the most popular.

Advantages

lockable from inside and outside
no exclusion of family members
Security even when leaving the house

Disadvantages

Locking cylinders may be visible from the outside

What distinguishes an electric crossbar lock and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

With the electric crossbolt lock, the cylinder does not close mechanically but electronically. These crossbolts are available in different variations, for example with a built-in chip, where a sensor must be held in front of a slide. There are also remote controls, or combination locks. Very special designs offer opening and closing also by fingerprint

Advantages

 no key necessary
lockable from inside and outside
easy use

Disadvantages

 Price
Problems during power failures

What distinguishes a crossbolt lock with push button and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

A cross bolt lock with push button does not require a key, but is opened and closed by a mechanical knob.  This version can only be locked from the inside and is therefore only suitable for doors that are not used very often.

Advantages

easy use
no key necessary
cheap

Disadvantages

only lockable from inside

Purchase criteria: You can compare and evaluate crossbolt locks based on these factors

In the following we would like to show you which factors you can use to compare and evaluate crossbolt locks. This will make it easier for you to decide whether a particular crossbar lock is suitable for you or not.

In summary, these are:

  • Condition
  • Type of locking system
  • Protection classes
  • Size
  • Colour

The nature of the door

Regardless of the crossbar used, the nature of the door also plays a decisive role in security. In addition to the door leaf width, the surface is also important.

Ideally an entrance door should be made of robust wood. Even good plastic or metal doors can be upgraded with a cross bar.

It becomes difficult if the doors have inlets or windows. On the one hand, it is difficult to attach the crossbar, and on the other hand, the crossbar can be opened if you reach through.

Basically, the thicker the door leaf, the more stable the security protection with a crossbar

Type of locking system

Of course, the cross bolt used must also be compatible with the door’s locking system. If you want to install a crossbar that works independently of the locking system, you do not need to consider this point.

But if, for example, you want to install a bolt that is lockable from the outside and works via the normal locking system, you have to make sure that the crossbolt lock is compatible with your locking cylinder.

VdS protection classes

If you decide on a crossbar with cylinder, you should also inform yourself about the VdS protection classes.

Size

When selecting the size, attention should be paid to the manufacturer’s specifications for which door leaf width the respective latch is suitable.

Colour

Of course, the colour also plays a decisive role in the selection, after all, the crossbar is always visible on the respective door and should therefore blend harmoniously into the surrounding environment. Make sure to use neutral colours that match the colour of your door, for example white or grey.

Trivia: Worth knowing facts about crossbolt locks

Do I need the permission of my landlord if I want to install a crossbar lock?

If you intend to install a cross-bolt lock on your apartment, it is always advisable to obtain written permission from the landlord.

The landlord may not forbid you to provide sufficient burglary protection, but it may be that you have to dismantle the bolt again when you move out, or that you have to bear the costs yourself. In addition, the deadbolt represents a structural change and is to some extent also a damage to the door leaf.

However, since you increase the value of the apartment, the interest is on both sides and there are few reasons why your landlord should not agree.

By the way, you are on the safe side if you have the installation done by a professional. Even if the installation is not very complicated, the specialist will give you a warranty and a contact person in case of possible damages.

What are the slump statistics in Germany?

In Germany about 120,000 burglaries are reported to the police every year. The insured losses amount to around 360 million euros each year.

The detection rate of burglaries is about 18%. The probability of catching the perpetrators is therefore very low.

46.3% of attempted burglaries in Germany remained at the experimental stage. This is mainly due to the fact that burglars were either unable to get into the flats quickly enough or were caught off guard during the break-in attempt.

A good security of the apartment or house has therefore almost a 50% chance of preventing a break-in and thus the theft of your property.
