Guide: Questions you should consider before buying a door lock
Does every front door lock fit in every door?
Not every front door lock fits every front door!
If you want to remove and change your front door lock, you will have to consider the dimensions of your front door lock. Therefore, before buying a new door lock, you should determine the exact dimensions you need.
How do I measure the right front door lock?
There are 2 ways to determine the dimensions of your cylinder lock:
Option 1: Measuring the old lock
Option 2: Measuring the door
Option 1: Measuring the old castle
Measure with your removed front door lock from the edge of the cylinder to the centre of the hole in the forend screw. You do this from both sides to measure the inside dimension on the one hand and the outside dimension on the other.
The inside dimension is measured from the side of the cylinder edge that faces the inside of the house when the lock is installed in the door. The outer dimension is measured from the other side of the cylinder edge to the centre of the hole in the forend screw.
Thus one has the following values: inner dimension, outer dimension and the total length of the cylinder (inner dimension + outer dimension).
Option 2: Measuring the door
Measure from the inside to the centre of the hole of the forend screw to obtain the inside dimension. Measure from the outside to obtain the outside dimension. Here too, the inside dimension and the outside dimension make up the total length of the cylinder.
The overall length of the cylinder is important because the door lock should not protrude more than 3 mm from the door to avoid burglary methods such as pulling the lock out.

How much does a door lock cost?
You can buy very simple door locks online, for example at Amazon, from around 10 €. This lower price limit applies especially to knob cylinders and double cylinders.
Simple electronic cylinders are available online from 35 €.
If, on the other hand, you attach importance to a high security level that protects against various burglary methods, the price for knob and double cylinders can be over 100 €.
There is no upper limit to the cost of an electronic cylinder, which can exceed 1000 €. This is especially the case if it is an entire electronic system. Individual electronic locks can cost up to 500 €.
Prices vary for different sizes and especially for different technologies.
Who pays for a defective front door lock?
Who has to pay for the cost of a new front door lock depends on the cause of the defect of the old front door lock.
If you have wilfully or negligently damaged the front door lock, you will have to pay the costs.
However, if the door lock is worn out or damaged only by its sole use, the lessor must pay the costs of replacing the defective lock in accordance with § 538 BGB.
This regulation applies as long as nothing else is stated in the rental contract.
Where can I buy a front door lock?
In principle, you can buy locking cylinders online, in a DIY store or in a specialist security store.
If you don’t need any advice and you know the dimensions and type of your door lock, the Internet offers you numerous possibilities to purchase the right lock. Platforms like Amazon, but also online retailers offer a wide range of different locks in all price categories.
Home improvement stores such as Obi, Hagebaumarkt, Bauhaus and Hornbach also offer front door locks. You can go there with your finished lock and have it measured to determine your needs. The choice is limited in contrast to specialist stores or online platforms.
A specialist safety retailer is the best place for you to go if you want to get intensive advice. B
Decision: What types of door locks are there, and which one is right for you?
All the types of cylinders mentioned here are subtypes of profile cylinders. These are the most common form of security locks today.
What distinguishes a double cylinder and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
Double cylinders are the most common type of locks used today. At the same time they can also have a danger or panic function, which makes it possible to unlock the door even if there is a key in the lock on the other side of the cylinder.
These locks are ideal for the apartment door as well as the front door. In addition, even high-quality double cylinders can be bought at reasonable prices.
Optimal for front doors
No disadvantages whatsoever
What distinguishes a knob cylinder and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
Knob cylinders can be opened from the outside with the appropriate key. On the inside there is a knob that allows you to open the door at any time without a key.
The advantage of knob cylinders is that you can open the door from the inside at any time, even without a key. At the same time, this lock is suitable for groups of people such as senior citizens and children, where you want to be able to open the door from the outside at any time with the right key. This is made possible by this lock, as no key can be inserted from the inside.
The disadvantage of this cylinder type is that the knob must not be visible. Glass doors, for example, provide burglars with information that enables them to choose the best burglary method for them.
Opening at any time without a key from the inside
Not suitable for glass doors
What distinguishes an electronic cylinder and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
Electronic cylinders are front door locks that are regulated by an electronic control unit. The cylinder is operated by a motor when you enter an identifier such as a numerical code. On the other hand, you can also hold your fingerprint, chip, transponder or mobile phone to a reading head.
One advantage of electronic locks is that if you lose your means of identification, you can simply deactivate it. With numerical codes or fingerprints, you cannot lose the means of access and thus cannot lock yourself out.
Overall, electronic entrance door locks increase convenience and can now also be retrofitted at low cost.
Some electronic locks also have an additional mechanical emergency lock for emergencies. Electronic front door locks are considered very secure, as they prevent burglars from copying the key and opening the door without force, for example. Furthermore, electronic locks cannot be manipulated mechanically.
A disadvantage is that the electronic lock must either be connected to power via the door or bell or the lock is powered by an accumulator or battery. If the lock is powered by electricity, there is a risk that you will not be able to gain access in case of a power failure. Battery or accumulator operated locks must be monitored with regard to power supply. Some electronic entrance door locks emit a signal when the power level is low.
Furthermore, as a user of an electronic entrance door lock, you must be open-minded about this technology.
Overall, electronic entrance door locks and their installation are more expensive than conventional mechanical locks.
Overall increased security compared to mechanical locks
Loss of the access medium such as fingerprint or code not possible
Either complex supply via power or observation of the battery or accumulator level
Minimum degree of openness towards technology
More expensive than mechanical locks
Purchase criteria: You can compare and rate door locks based on these factors
You want to buy a door lock? In the following we would like to show you the criteria you can use to compare and evaluate door locks. This will make it easier for you to decide whether a particular product is suitable for you or not.
In summary, these are:
- The picking protection
- The anti-drilling device
- The pull protection
- The backup card
- The danger and panic function
- The dimensions
The picking protection, the drilling or tapping protection, the pulling or core pulling protection and the security card are relevant criteria in relation to the front door lock that increase security.
The picking protection
In order to evaluate and compare the protection against lockpicking, you should pay attention to whether the front door lock or locking system is equipped with a pick and strike key escapement, a magnetic coding and/or a paracentric key profile.
Lockpicking or picking refers to an unlocking technique for opening locking cylinders. No matching key is required and the lock is not damaged.
Lockpicking uses mechanical inaccuracies of the main door lock to move the pins into the correct position for opening the door with the help of a suitable lockpicking tool.
A front door lock should therefore be equipped with a pick and strike key escapement (PSH). Locking systems with magnetic coding are also an effective measure against lock picking.
Front door locks that have a paracentric key profile also make lock picking considerably more difficult. A paracentric key channel makes it almost impossible to insert lockpicking tools into the key channel.
The anti-drilling device
To protect yourself against drilling your main door lock, the pins of your lock should be made of hardened steel. Additional hardened parts of the lock also prevent other drilling methods.
The anti-drilling protection protects the entrance door lock itself against drilling with special drills, because the anti-drilling protection pins are made of a hard steel material. As a result, drilling takes considerably longer and burglars are more likely to abandon their plans.
The outside of the lock can also be made of an extra hard material to prevent other drilling methods.
The pull protection
The pulling protection or core pulling protection is to prevent the cylinder core from being pulled out of the housing. Core pulling protection can be provided by the fitting or the locking cylinder.
When the main door lock is pulled out, a screw is fastened in the insertion slot of the lock cylinder and the cylinder core is torn out with this screw.
Core extraction protection by means of a fitting is achieved by covering the cylinder core so that only the matching key but not the matching tool for extracting the cylinder core fits in the insertion slot.
The core pulling protection on the locking cylinder prevents the cylinder core from being pulled out by the fact that the inner piece of the cylinder core is enlarged, whereby the larger piece is already outside the cylinder housing and therefore cannot be pulled out.
The backup card
In the case of a front door lock that has a security card, you need the security card when copying the corresponding key. This ensures that if you lose your key or lend it to someone else, no one can make an unauthorized copy of your key.
The emergency and danger function
Thanks to the emergency and danger function, it is possible to open the lock and the door from the other side with the appropriate key, even if the key is on the other side.
A lock with emergency and danger function offers no disadvantages. However, entrance door locks with this function are only available from a length of 60 mm.
Knob cylinders always have an emergency and danger function due to the type of this lock.
The last crtierium to evaluate and compare door locks are the available measurements.
In the advice section I already explained to you how to measure a lock cylinder. Now that you have measured your required dimensions, you need to make sure that the door lock is available in your required size.
Trivia: Facts worth knowing about door locks
How do I change a front door lock?
So that you can also install a new front door lock directly after buying it, I describe in 4 steps how to change your front door lock:
- Use a screwdriver to loosen the fixing nut from the front of the door leaf. Insert the key into the lock and turn it to approximately 11 or 13 o’clock. This should allow you to remove the cylinder from the case
Take the new front door lock and insert the corresponding key into it. Turn the key until the driver no longer protrudes. Then insert the lock into the housing
Put the fixing nut back into the door leaf and screw it tight
Push the lock. If it does not work smoothly, loosen the fixing nut again slightly
This video shows once again how easy it is to change the front door lock:
How do I defrost a front door lock?
There are two proven ways to free a castle from frost. Either you heat the lock or the key or you use a de-icing fluid.
As the temperature drops, door locks freeze. I don’t recommend a violent solution because you could damage the lock. Recommended methods are:
The best and fastest way to de-ice a door lock is to use a de-icing agent.
If you don’t have a de-icer, you can try heating the lock gently with a lighter.
You can prevent the lock from freezing by adding several drops of oil to the lock before the first night frosts.
How do I lubricant/oil a front door lock?
Your front door lock rakes or jams? Then you should oil it!
Perfect for lubricating your front door lock is silicone spray, which you spray into the lock cylinder. We also recommend a special oil for locks, which you drip into the lock cylinder.
Never use household oils because they will stick to your door lock!
