Shower hose test: the ranking
1st place: Hansgrohe Isiflex shower hose 160cm
The Isiflex shower hose from Hans Grohe with a hose length of 1.60 m ensures plenty of freedom of movement under the shower. Thanks to its chrome-plated surface, it is particularly easy to clean and also kink-resistant. A swivel additionally prevents the hose from twisting.
2nd place: Antibacterial shower hose 120 cm
This shower hose is made of plastic and is therefore distinguished as particularly antibacterial. Its modern design in glossy glossy white looks elegant and special, especially in modern bathrooms.
The hose has 1/2 inch DIN connections for the hand shower and faucet and a swivel cone on both sides made of chrome-plated brass to avoid annoying twisting of the hose.
3rd place: Santras shower hose bronze 150 cm
The easy-care plastic shower hose from Santras, made in Germany from high-quality materials, is available in various colours.
It is 1.50 m long and has a standard 1/2 inch brass conical nut connection, making it suitable for a wide range of applications. Its non-twisting connection saves the user the trouble of twisting the hose.
Advisor: Questions you should consider before buying a shower hose
In which rooms and for what purpose can I use a shower hose?
A shower hose can be used in all those rooms where water is to be transferred from a tap to a hand shower. This is usually the case with bathtubs, showers or in the kitchen. Even with certain garden showers, the hose needs to be replaced from time to time.
In what lengths are shower hoses available?
Shower hoses are available in the following standard lengths: 1.25 metres, 1.50 metres, 1.60 metres, 2.00 metres. In addition, there are also various special lengths available.
Which length is right for you depends entirely on where you attach the shower hose and what you need it for. The hose should be able to hold a hand shower comfortably and without tension over the head of the shower user.
Usually shower hoses with a length of 1.50m are used for showering. If the hose is only used to clean the bathtub, a length of 1.25m is sufficient.
What material is a shower hose made of?
In the past, shower hoses were often made of metal. If the workmanship of a metal hose is of high quality, there is nothing to be said against it.
However, a metal hose in a bathtub can leave scratches in the bath, for example. That is why shower hoses are often available in chrome or chrome-plated nowadays. But there are also hoses made of plastic.
The important thing with both is that it is kink-proof. This increases the service life of the hose and prevents the water from accumulating.
Another weak point with shower hoses can be avoided if you choose a hose that does not twist. In the long run, twisting leads to cracks in the hose. These two characteristics are often referred to as anti-fold kink-resistant and twist-free.
In which colours are shower hoses available?
Shower hoses are now available in almost all colours and there are almost no limits to the user in terms of taste. Various companies have also specialised in custom-made products and enable their customers to creatively design their own shower hose.
How much do shower hoses cost?
As already suspected, prices vary depending on material, quality and supplier. The prices for a shower hose range from about 8 to 130 euros. However, high-quality brand products are also available at a low price of around 10 euros.
Nevertheless, you should pay attention to the features indicated for low-cost models. Cheap shower hoses, for example, are not always kink-proof.
So small cracks can form at the same kinks over and over again and after some time water will leak out at unwanted places.
Where can I buy a shower hose?
DIY stores as well as online trade offer a very large selection of shower hoses in different quality and a wide price range.
According to our research, most shower hoses are sold at these online shops:
Who are the best known manufacturers of shower hoses?
Germany’s best-known manufacturers of shower hoses have spread their company sites all over the country. To them belong:
The Hans Grohe company, founded in 1901, is the best-known manufacturer of shower hoses, fittings, showers, thermostats, drains and other sanitary accessories in Germany. In this field the company sells certified and tested products of the highest quality standard.
Hansa Armaturen GmbH is also well known as a manufacturer of bathroom and kitchen fittings, shower systems and temperature controllers for the private and public sector. Founded in 1911, HANSA is now one of the top 3 manufacturers of fittings in Germany and Austria and employs around 600 people worldwide.
Decision: What types of shower hoses are available and which one is right for you?
If you want to buy a shower hose, there are several alternatives to choose from. The basic decision has to be made between the lengths and the material.
You can choose between these two materials:
As a rule of thumb for the selection of the size, the hose should reach comfortably and without pressure a bit above the head of the showering person during use (e.g. when showering). If it is used exclusively for cleaning the bath, care should be taken to ensure that the hand shower can be used without having to pull and strain the hose.
If the hose is too short, showering the body or washing the hair can become unnecessarily tedious. Too long hoses, on the other hand, can interfere with showering or even pose a tripping hazard and the associated safety problems.
However, thanks to the variety of sizes of shower hoses available, it should not be a problem to find the right dimensions for your purposes.
What distinguishes a plastic shower hose and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
Plastic hoses are easy to clean and do not worry about chafing or scratches.
Easy to clean
High standard of hygiene
No scratches or scuff marks
Lime deposits quickly
What distinguishes a shower hose made of metal and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
Hoses made of metal are particularly durable thanks to their chrome coating. Due to their wound metal bands, however, they are also somewhat more difficult to clean. However, they are extremely resilient and tear and kink resistant.
More difficult to clean
Scratches or scuff marks on the tub
Purchase criteria: You can compare and rate shower hoses based on these factors
In the next section we will show you which aspects will help you to decide between the multitude of possible shower hoses.
These are the factors that help you to distinguish different shower hoses more easily:
- Length & Dimensions
- Material & Bauart
Length & Dimensions
Shower hoses are available in different lengths. Do you shower in the bathtub or in a shower cubicle? Are the showers rather large or rather small, is there a shower rail with movable hand shower holder or does the shower hose hang on a deep-seated bath mixer?
In order to buy the right length for your purposes, you should look at your individual shower or kitchen situation and use a folding rule or tape measure to measure how long your shower hose should be, so that you can have a comfortable shower or the like
Material & Bauart
Shower hoses are available with plastic or metal sheathing. Which hose you choose also depends on your taste in terms of aesthetics.
Plastic hoses are often available smooth and slightly matt. Metal hoses have a twisted, shiny surface. The advantages and disadvantages of metal and plastic hoses are listed above.
Especially high-quality shower hoses have drinking water approval. This is because water can flush harmful substances out of low-quality plastics. This possibility is excluded with shower hoses with drinking water approval and is therefore highly recommended, especially for the kitchen.
Shower hoses are available in various colours. When choosing the colour, it is best to consider the colour scheme of the room in which the shower hose is to be installed. Classic chrome or silver shower hoses are easiest to combine with other colours. White or black hoses can set beautiful accents.
Shower hoses are available from different manufacturers. There are no-name products, as well as somewhat more expensive branded products or even custom-made products.
Branded products often have a longer warranty and are made of higher quality materials, custom-made products take into account customer wishes regarding length and colour.
Trivia: Worth knowing facts about shower hoses
How do I connect a shower hose?
The installation of a shower hose is simple and usually works completely without tools. The old shower hose is unscrewed with some pressure and then the new one is screwed on.
Most shower columns have a 1/2 inch thread, on which most standard shower hoses fit without problems. The shower heads that can be connected to it also have a standardized thread that fits every shower hose.
Fittings with a 3/4 inch connection or other special sizes, for example for fittings in the kitchen, are the exception.
There is a transition piece for these fittings, which can be put on and then allows the use of a shower hose with 1/2 inch thread. This saves you the purchase of an expensive shower hose with special dimensions.
Two seals are required for each shower hose. These ensure a tight connection between hose and fitting. Often the seals are already included in the package when the shower hose is purchased.
Can I shorten a shower hose?
It is not recommended to shorten a shower hose at this point. If you need a particularly short shower hose, you can find it online. Shower hoses are available here from a length of 30cm.
Can I repair a broken shower hose?
Shower hoses can become porous with age and thus leak. If this causes the water to run along the shower hose while showering, instead of out of the shower head, something must be done.
Sometimes only the sealing rings at the beginning and end of the shower hose are porous and replaceable. However, if the hose is older or the water comes out between the threaded parts, it is not worth repairing it because the hose is exposed to pressure and moisture every time you shower.
Before a new hose is screwed on, the sealing rings must be placed in the fittings of the new shower hose. Then the thread is screwed onto the water connection counterclockwise and tightened.
Then the shower head is screwed tight. Only then can it be checked for tightness. If no water penetrates the screw connections, you have done everything right!
How do I clean a shower hose?
In principle, cleaning your shower hose is very easy, especially if it is made of plastic or covered with plastic. A gentle lemon cleaner, bath cleaner or descaler and a soft cloth with which you regularly (once a week) wipe the hose are suitable for care.
To prevent water stains from forming on the hose, simply wipe the shower hose with a microfibre cloth afterwards.
To clean the interior, it is sufficient to rinse the shower hose for a few minutes with hot water turned on to kill bacteria.
With a metal hose, wiping is somewhat more difficult, as lime can be deposited in the grooves. In this case it is recommended to put the hose in water with detergent and rinse it clean with warm water after a soaking time.
For particularly stubborn soiling, a toothbrush can be used to apply the cleaning agents, in order to reach even the narrowest parts of the corrugated metal shower hose. Or follow the tip from the following video:
